While the net is awash with news that the order of 150 nos for the trainer jet requirement program has been awarded to RoK. No official confirmation yet but multiple sources are reporting it including in house favorite I R D W & The Eurasian Times .Egypt interested in some DRDO tech, developed items

Still not sure about Akash-NG range. In the recent Def Expo they just showed the range as 35kms(IIRC). Akash-NG even with a single pulse motor can easily cover 50kms range(it's bigger than QRSAM). With twin pulse(as all the reports say that it has), we're looking at a true range of between 80 to 120kms.In the 2nd video he said we can neutralise aerial threat aircraft by QRSAM/Akash NG at 30-50km. That is consistent with past defexpo information.
For drones high power mw or laser burning is used.

It's both longer/thicker and heavier than MRSAM. And MRSAM'S range is anywhere between 70 to 110 kms. What's your take on Akash-NG range? Why the hell is DRDO so much downplaying its range![]()
Heavier weight is because it's longer and thicker than Barak-8. That itself means more propellant/bigger motor. There is no way Akash-NG airframe is going to be less advance than MRSAMs'. Thus more range is a given if we use dual-pulse motor.I am not sure either though I am not sure heavy weight being the indication it can go really long,
if they take the dual pulse version then it will definitely be alternative to MRSAM.
Akash system was dedicated as a short range sam , hence the upto 50km confidence level make sense for that. They have MRSam for mid rang 70-100km and after that xrsam is in development, seems army may also be getting it.
There is no comparison between weight of Akash and Akash-NG. Akash is ramjet powered missile that weighs 700+ kilos. Akash-NG is going to be around 300 to 350kgs thanks to dual-pulse rocket motor. But still more heavy than 275kg Barak-8. QRSAM is around 4.4m and weighs 270kgs.Akash ng i think canister system & possibly composite use lesser wight missiles are what got improved from original 25km non-canister akash. So as multilayer ad go, 30/40km QRSAM & 50km NG would complement well.
How do you come up with this conclusion? Do you have the exact weight and dimensions of Akash-NG to compare with other systems?Akash-NG even with a single pulse motor can easily cover 50kms range(it's bigger than QRSAM). Superior, in my book.
XRSAM project will apparently will have two missiles: ERSAM and XRSAM.
Earlier ERSAM was supposed to be MRSAM with additional booster with 150 to 200kms range. Now they may go with Akash-NG with booster to achieve that goal.
XRSAM could be AAD or AD-1 derived. Not too sure on this. This is going to be the 350 kms range AWACS killer missile.

Akash-NG is the future of our air-defence. Can't wait to have it in active service.

Ashwin, I speak or guess only when there is enough proof. People guessed Akash-NG's dimensions when DRDL launched a tender about its cannister. How do you come up with this conclusion? Do you have the exact weight and dimensions of Akash-NG to compare with other systems?
15 of these being built.

diameter: 265 mm. Length:470mm (estimated). Weight: 350-375 kg (estimated). https://t.co/K3PyJ5IFkq
Agreed. It's fundamentally wrong to evaluate a SAM based on range alone. These systems are developed based on requirements to fill air defense gaps.
Very nice findYeah that is certain, akash ng launcher & mrsam launcher system easily vet that, 6 vs 8 formation. I mean for use it is possible IAF gets mrsam while army use akash ng which in turn need to match area coverage & objective (point defense vs long range attack interceptor), should that be the army specification. My guess is these systems complement each others role. So in that case, for akash ng 40-50 km bubble would be very good, even if it can do job well beyond that range too. Test either happened or very soon, there was banshee drone procurement notice specific for this very recently, Nov-Dec.
XRSAm will probably have similar missile iteration like s-400, multiple interceptors. They finalised config of arming & detonating mech of this system (which goes into every missile really). That project has a curious name.

If this is true, then its close to Barak 8. The requirement must be different on warhead weight and altitude. Thus the overall weight and range difference. It will definitely has~50km at least as max range.Ashwin, I speak or guess only when there is enough proof. People guessed Akash-NG's dimensions when DRDL launched a tender about its cannister.
Also, Indranil has already spilled the beans, if you haven't noticed:

Yes and Yes. Most radar electronics, sensor suits, MEMS, and electro-optical sensors, etc. don't need cutting-edge nodes. Material and processes are still a challenge. Compound semiconductors are still challenging due to the materials in use.https://t.co/T4NP5puTrV
