Akash Series Surface to Air Missile System

Akash NG (According to me) for IAF is what QR-SAM is for IA. It's meant for mobile Quick Response. So 30km likely.

MR-SAM is already on order, with the 70km range criteria. Wouldn't make sense imo to go for another missile in that range.

QR-SAM , Akash NG and VL-SRSAM all seems related.

I used to think the same. Although not as bad as comparing it to QRSAM, I did assume it's in the same class as VL-SRSAM or NASAMS, and the bigger missile design was meant to carry a bigger 60Kg warhead vs Astra's 15Kg. But now, it's increasingly looking like Akash NG competes with MRSAM. It has also been designed for 70Km and carries a 60kg warhead, like the Barak 8.

But it's possible that the Akash NG's surveillance radar isn't on the same level as the EL/M-2084. We now know the targeting radar is on the launchers themselves, no different from QRSAM, but once the capabilities of the surveillance radar is released, we will know more. If it's an S band radar, then we will know for sure that it's basically a Desi MRSAM.

IAF holds large number of S125 units. Obsolete by now.
So we have around 30 or so S125 units. And IAF is planning 18 units of MRSAM and 15 units of S125 upgrade for the interim. Now we know that untill there is a repeat order for Akash 1P/S , there is no way IAF will be able to replace all the S125 units. Already some of the Airbase share air defences with Army.

So it might be possibility that the remaining S125 , which is atleast 12 units might need a more desi (more desi than MRSAM) option.

There are Osa 9m33 in IAF too.

Let's wait for the official induction of QR SAM in Army first. A lot of info will surface then.

Wait for official press release, interviews or posters from events like defexpo. None of the media reports are reliable.

All maybe related but at the same time all are designed for different requirements from the ground up. Always look for multiple parameters like engagement altitude and warhead weight when judging a missile. Seeker and solid motor are the common thread here.

QRSAM and SR/MRSAM requirements are definitely different. For the simple reason of altitude. Akash-1 gives twice the altitude of QRSAM.

IAF ordered SPYDER under the "low-level quick reaction missile" program. Thus they have already filled the requirement.

Minimum altitude of interception is also important. For SPYDER and QRSAM it's 20-30 meter.

Our SAM squadron strength is going into insane category.

With 15 Akash squadrons, 9 SPYDER, 9 MRSAM and 5 S-400 squadrons (looks like they are gonna call a regiment a squadron), we are already at 38, and will still see at least 6 squadrons of Akash NG and 5-7 more S-400 squadrons. So, potentially well over 45 squadrons. And there's rumours of the IAF being interested in VL-SRSAM as well.

There's no relation to other SAMs. This is the army's requirement. It is meant to operate below an altitude of 6Km. For the static requirement, they have chosen Akash. And their mobile component is the QRSAM. Plus they are also getting 5 regiments of MRSAM from 2024 onwards.

VL-SRSAM is more up to the IAF's speed, since it can reach high altitude.

Also, wouldn't it make more sense for India to buy S500 instead of S400, assuming that India will actually buy more units?

After ordering 5, the IAF had announced that their total requirement is 10-12.

As to whether they should choose the S-500 over the S-400, I don't know, since not much is known about the S-500 yet to have an informed opinion.

🤣

The post of expecting something positive to always happen & predict it always has already been taken.

Management here takes a dim view on anybody else trying to usurp that position.
