Arihant-class SSBN - News & Discussions

5 Arihant Class?

2 Arihant and 3 S4 class

Delays in S5 to beyond 2035?
It might not be due to challenges with the hull or the propulsion but perhaps the delivery vehicles? I haven't heard of a lot of updates on the K6. I know they wanted it to be MIRV'd with significant range. Maybe because K6 design isn't finalized, neither are launch tubes so the design of the S5 is just stuck?

So much ambiguity is there. First they were saying 3 Subs of S4 class along with 2 of Arihant class and now they are saying S2, S3, S4 and S4* will be followed by S5.
There is no ambiguity as such. It's been known for some time. In UPA time it was decided to go for S4* as a stopgap and to keep the line running (Thus the name). Current yard will be repurposed to build SSNs.

Second Arihant-Class submarine ‘INS Arighaat’ commissioned into Indian Navy in the presence of Raksha Mantri in Visakhapatnam

‘Arighaat’ to further strengthen India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, establish strategic balance & peace and play a decisive role in the country’s security: Shri Rajnath Singh

“PM Modi-led Govt is working on mission mode to equip soldiers with top-quality weapons & platforms”

The second Arihant-Class submarine ‘INS Arighaat’ was commissioned into the Indian Navy on August 29, 2024 at Visakhapatnam in the presence of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh. In his address, the Raksha Mantri exuded confidence that ‘Arighaat’ will further strengthen India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, help in establishing strategic balance & peace in the region, and play a decisive role in the security of the country. He described it as an achievement for the nation and a testament to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi-led Government’s unwavering resolve to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence.

Shri Rajnath Singh commended the Indian Navy, DRDO & the Industry for their hard work and synergy in achieving this capability. He termed this self-reliance as the foundation of self power. He appreciated the fact that the country’s industrial sector, especially MSMEs, have received a huge boost through this project, and more employment opportunities have been created.

Recalling former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s political will which put India at par with a nuclear weapon state, the Raksha Mantri said, “Today, India is surging ahead to become a developed country. It is essential for us to develop rapidly in every field, including defence, especially in today's geopolitical scenario. Along with economic prosperity, we need a strong military. Our government is working on mission mode to ensure that our soldiers possess top-quality weapons and platforms made on Indian soil” .

The construction of INS Arighaat involved the use of advanced design and manufacturing technology, detailed research & development, utilisation of special materials, complex engineering and highly skilled workmanship. It has the distinction of having the indigenous systems and equipment which were conceptualised, designed, manufactured & integrated by the Indian scientists, industry and Naval personnel.

The technological advancements undertaken indigenously on this submarine make it significantly more advanced than its predecessor Arihant. The presence of both INS Arihant and INS Arighaat will enhance India’s capability to deter potential adversaries and safeguard its national interests.

Imo, S4 and S4* are just stretched derivatives of the basic Arihant design with about a approx 1000t increase in displacement and 8 tubes. So not a new class imo,

Funny, it was P. Chidambaram, former Union Finance Minister, who questioned why a strategic missile sub costing thousands of crores carried only 4 missile tubes. That was when they decided to bump up the loadout to 8 tubes.

The Arihant and S4 are essentially our first-gen boomers. The S5 will be the real deal.

I dont think anyone claimed S4 as new class. Yes, S5 class will be the real deal with 12,000+ ton displacement. Four of them will be enough for our usecase. It will take the next few decades to operationalize them. Same goes for ~6,000 ton SSNs.

Not P Chidambaram but R Chidambaram. He was the principal scientific advisor.

Arihant was a TD which in our case would not be service inducted generally. But because the sub was ready then navy decided it needed to have an attack capability, hence the B-05LV project. Nobody till now knows what the dia of the tubes, so who kows maybe that is where Arighaat improvement lies ? instead of 3 per piece , it could be 4. Among SSBNs , S2 S3 are sort of infant with pocket rockets K15, which if it gets the usual crmc makeover now, should be able to fit 4 in place of 3 anyway with the weight reduction, no ?

The Arihant was initially planned to be an SSN after the USNs muscle flexing during the 1971 Bangladesh episode. This was why she was smaller than other subs. By all accounts, each sub in the line will get incremental upgrades until the S5 class hits the water. At that point, the Arihant-class may well be converted to SSGN.

This is a video from 2023 taken by Vivek N. Rathod from RK Beach near the Vizag port.

The sub shown here is probably INS Arihant:

You can see some personnel onboard the conning tower as the submarine navigates out of the port. You can also see the periscope & ESM/ECM tower.

The sail of the Arihant class is derived from the sail of the Kilo class. Thanks @Amarante for this find.

The only differences are that Arihant's sail has planes, no exhaust ports & no snorkel.

Hope they remove the viewing ports & add a sail cusp on the next gen subs.
