IAF Chronicles - A side view of whats going on behind the closed doors in New Delhi

We're going around in circles .What I meant to ask was are we going to develop a navalised indigenous version of the AEW that the IAF has ?

No clue. Right now we are only talking about importing one. DRDO may be developing the technologies for it though.

It doesn't make sense. How difficult would building a navalised version be , given that they've already constructed one for the IAF ?
You think an AEW&C and Maritime patrol aircraft are similar tasks ?

For light, we have already chosen Dornier Do-228. IIRC, 24 have been ordered.

For medium, the competition is yet to start. It will have a P-8 lite, C-130J, Saab 2000, ERJ 45, Falcon etc as platforms.
Might go for C295 based DRDO solution.

P8 is an ASW patrol, not just AEWCAS. It also includes launch of anti submarine missiles/torpedoes from heights which will splash into the water and then guide itself to submarine. P8 also has hydrocarbon detector to sense diesel exhaust from submarine snorkel.

Also, one must understand that the cost of Boeing 737 civilian version without seats itself is 100 million dollars while the cost of P8 is 200-250 million dollars. I don't see p8 as unnecessarily expensive. Until India is able to get a big aircraft on its own, there is no substitute for P8 import or at least import if the modified Boeing 737 aircraft at 150-200 million cost

Can't say.

The MRMR requirement is very old. If DRDO comes out with an adequate replacement, then the navy will obviously consider it. CABS is working on 19 C-295 based patrol aircraft for the Coast Guard, they are starting with 6. But the navy may require something bigger than C-295 or ERJ 145, something like the C-130J. Nobody can say anything right now.

Naval systems are very different from air force systems.

If I knew that much , why would I be posting it here.
Netra AEW&C (airborne early warning and control) has to do with airspace management. A maritime patrol aircraft like P-3 orion is concerned with sea and underwater surveillance and warfare. Netra doesn't carry torpedoes or antiship missiles but P-3 or P-8 do. Both projects have not that much in common.

CABS has been vested with the development of Multi Mission Maritime Aircraft (MMMA) for Indian Coast Guard. Accordingly a lead-in programme– AESA Based Integrated Sensor Suite (ABISS) for maritime and pollution surveillance, was awarded to develop the critical technologies - namely the AESA in X band primarily for maritime surveillance and imaging

24 P8I is minimum needed (ideally 30+) with at least 44 odd Guardians (ideal 60)

Next coming soon is A330 deal - for AWACS and MRTT both..Should see some progress on that.. focus on AWACS and AAR is back .. Dark horse being KC46 for an outside chance.

@Sathya
Not lying low... travelling here and there.. most of the info chain is kind of cold till 15th Jan..

Forces are very very apprehensive that slowly mood is seen in government towards pro-election over pro modernisation and pending deal clearances.. Frustration is growing a lot more with the way things are progressing..

coming weeks should see some BM tests soon for A5 and K4.

Rest will update as soon as I get something..

Fortunately Jan15 is already up.. :)
Awaiting info @ today s end .
And also keeping my fingers crossed

Every nation has its specific demands depending on its Seas.
Turkish Navy revised a few times its MELTEM III project but will introduce a state of the art Maritime Patrol Aircraft with impressive power to detect and and combat sub sea targets.

Meltem III project could be a solution for India Navy too

Turkish ATR 72ASW is equipped with a mission system that includes:
• electro-optical sensors;
• Search radar;
• ESM sensor (Electronic Support Measures);
• MAD sensor (Magnetic Anomaly Detector);
• Integrated self-protection system, (Chaff & Flare Dispenser, Radar Warning, Missile Warning, Laser Warning);
• Sonobuoy launcher;
• Anti-submarine torpedoes carried on 2 pylons at the fuselage sides.

Meltem III will be added to CN-235 based Meltem II MPA- aircrafts

The cost of IC and FOC has more than doubled. This shows that it was not the actual cost but includes cost of capital investment too. IOC version was hand fitted and the parts were not compatible. So, machine made parts are now being procured. Don't mistake developmental cost for cost of planes

Figures released by MoD in the Parliament.

MKI costs 326Cr or $50M and LCA costs 299Cr or $46M.

What's the total no of MKI's we have ordered (incl the ones imported from Russia ) and what's the total no we have in the inventory of the IAF as of today ( excluding attrition but incl the imports ) . There seems to be some great confusion on the final nos .

We ordered 272, we are yet to take delivery of the last 2 squadrons. 2 more squadrons are expected to come in, but the contract is yet to be signed.

There were several contracts in phased manner of Su30. The older contract of 2002-3 etc have been completed and there is remaining contract of 182 left which is ongoing
