Indian Army Artillery Systems : News and Updates

Unlike how it all worked in IA's favor to kill any indigenous project to favor foreign products for kickbacks, ATAGS and other artillery systems now fall under the embargo list. Let's see how IA will be able to circumvent that situation
Personally i want IA to go for the best of bestest items, our procurement is so slow that we will not go for new system for atleast three decades after induction of new howitzers.
ATAGS is accurate, better technology & better rate of fire, all towed artillery have the intrinsic characteristics of lesser mobility and it needs to depend up on the towing truck for movement. I dont know how mere 3T makes a difference here.
The rate of fire and range should be the criteria for selecting the new 155/52 howitzer, in this field ATAGS is atleast a light year ahead of Bharat52.

ATAGS is ultra modern artillery when compares ti Bharat52, but IA is unhappy with this due to weight. 18T is way less than Bofors 30T, later one is considered to be the Worlds best self propelled artillery.
Bofors is around 12 tons combat ready I think. Not 30.

Around 4 tons of reduction is a big factor. We are not talking of tanks here mind it. But artillery pieces.

4 extra tons means a more powerful artillery tractor , it means that older bridges won't support that weight meaning restrictions on its movements.

Range in artillery is not that important as many people make out. For accuracy and effective results the Soltam 155/45 guns we have today , which has the longest range of 38km , will actually in service will not be used for that range more than 5% of its time.

More or less it's 10-15 kilometres for the 105/122 guns we have and 20-30 km range for the Soltam gun.

Even the Dhanush when has enough guns in army to form a unit will be used in that sense only.

The longer we go, the less accurate and more dispersed our shells will land. We are /have procured loitering munitions for accurate targeting of such targets at longer range. Guided Artillery rounds are more suited to target anything in the 30-50 km range , and artillery rockets with booster or more powerful motors , the 50-100 km range.

Usually when it's 100km range the targets will be taken out by means of SRBMs/CMs/A2G glide munitions.

If i am not wrong all indian military bridges are rated for T90 tanks. ATAGS have better accuracy too, even if we buy the argument of lesser accuracy for longer range fire then also we cannot undermine the rate of fire. Also NATO is working on a100+ km artillery shells too.
And howitzers are not direct competitor to rocket artillerymen, later ine is ridiculously inaccurate even at close range fire.

I do not know about the life of 122 and 130mm Soviet guns we have in our inventory. There still will be substantial numbers left after the project of 300 M46 upgrade. Refurbishing those and handing over those to BSF and ITBP should be considered.

First 2 upgraded M46s get I-note documentation. First lot to be delivered soon. Total contract for 300 guns. Will bring the number of 155/45 M46s to 480-500 guns. Cost effective and solid weapon platform.

GCF, Joint General Manager and Spokesman, Sanjay Shrivastava, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, informed that the first batch of nine Sharang Guns successfully passed through rigorous proof trials and final inspection by different agencies and got all the necessary clearances. It has been expected that competent authorities may anytime release induction order for supplying the first lot of Sharang Guns.

They had an MoU with BAE for MGS.

The OFB has at present made Dhanush — the indigenous 155x45 mm howitzer with a higher range than the original Bofors. The new gun being planned to be made along with BAE Systems will have a superior range than even Dhanush, on account of the higher calibre.
A mounted gun, it will have faster mobility as against a conventional towed howitzer. The guns will be mounted on a Tatra vehicle. It is planned to make the prototype by March next year with user trials expected to being in a couple of years, say sources.
A memorandum of understanding will be signed between OFB, BAE Systems and BEML on Tuesday at Kolkata. The guns would be made at the Gun Carriage Factory (GCF), Jabalpur, where the Dhanush is also being manufactured.
The MoU will entail a knowledge sharing agreement. BAE will share know how with OFB. BEML will be providing the vehicle on which the gun will be mounted. The three will be working in tandem on the project, said sources.

We should develop a 40k range artillary so that it can shoot the enemy from behind after circling the whole damn earth.lets just name it Bofors eXXX. and after that we should aim for circling moon an sun too. It will be a nice to have achivement for some of our resident militiary Exxx-perts
