Indian Missiles and Munitions Discussion

Look for whats up with AMCA. Last I heard there were too many rumors : Mk2 is AMCA / AMCA design changed / Engine will be from USA etc etc.

That was just poor reporting.

Planned Schedule:

MK1 FOC first flight - 2019
MK1A first flight - 2021
MK2 first flight - 2023 (4 Prototypes - powered by F414)
AMCA first flight - 2025 (4 Prototypes - powered by F414)

Was in office when saw this notification, an unusual silence on forum about this development @Parthu @Ashwin and others :).
In 1988, I was undergoing training as part of 141PC. My instructor was very strongly against me as I told him that I wud prefer to be a transport pilot. He wanted me to be a fighter pilot which actually was my dream. My turning point was low level navigation and close formation flying. We were supposed to fly at 500ft for low level navigation but I chose 200feet and flew all points to pin point accuracy and in close formation flying I flew with just half a wing spacinmg. My Instructor then asked me to fly with an officer who was Sqn Ldr then and aksed me if I will mind being hit by him in the cockpit as a reflex. I was an officer already. I had seen that officer hit his pupils badly and seen his pupils come out of cockpit with bleeding nose. In those days IAF had Flt Cadets. My prompt reply was that I do not mind as long as the officer does mind being hit by me in reflex and I being a boxer from NDA was used to delivering a combination of punches.
I never flew with that guy ever. So much so that even in Sea Harriers I met him and he did not take to air against me. I told this story to Parikkar when this officer was holding a very senior position in IAF and he laughed his heart out. That happened on 27th Feb 2016 in the office of RM.
Some people make it to top for want of better guys.

We have modified the seeker with better electronics but it remains a design based on Agat seeker. We are now planning to give it an AESA seeker.

Not correct new Astra seeker is fully indian. We tested it multiple times now. Astra/QRSAM production version will be with it.

I had stated that the design remains based on original Agat seeker even though we have modified with our own tech. So the new seeker is Indian but borrows from Russian seeker tech.

How did you reach that conclusion? From what I know the design is fully indigenous. If you are saying its 'inspired', that may be true.

We have used the complete architecture of Agat in This. the Initial lot of Astra missiles had fully imported seeker. We learnt from them and developed one for ourselves. We used our technology to modify it and convert it to a Ka band seeker head. 99% of 4th Gen fighters flying in the world do not have ESM and jamming capability for Ka band.

Check the area of testing.... Rajasthan or Kashmir???? May well be a "User" trials.....
Pokhran range, not sure how much was the diving angle tested as it is mostly plain. Any idea about the extra ability of this new pinaka version?

To be fair sir, everything we make is borrowed in some form. Either its the architecture or maybe just the conceptual idea. You can say the same about 99.99% of weapon manufacturers. But nonetheless it shouldn't belittle what has been achieved. For a first attempt, I am mighty impressed.

Does anybody have a close up picture of the seeker head of the guided pinaka ? Wasn't there a picture available ? Is the seeker homebuilt or did MBDA have something to do with it ?

You probably failed to read and understand me completely. I am for India and everything which is Indian and what is India. Our guys using that design and creating a seeker of their own in a frequency band which can't be detected by 99.99% fourth Gen fighters is by no means a trivial achievement.
