Indian Political Discussion

Perhaps. A good example ... The Ganga has turned into a giant sewer because of pakistanis and non-hindus.

I thought the major culprit was industrial and town waste. Lets find out the religion here.

Not to deny that stupid superstition of mainly hindus is responsible for a lot bad with Ganges.

those stupid superstitons somehow gave the highest GDP share of the world until the "enlightened west" showed up at our door.
those stupid superstitions somehow made sure our country is not wiped out of its ancient roots (like how Africa, Arabia just dont rememebr their pre-islamic or pre-christian era)

Is it just the Ganga ? What about the other rivers in India ? Are they pristine ? Are all the denizens of such places Hindutva vadis?

The problem with you and your ilk is your poison pen / tongue. Instead of focusing on the thrust of the problem , you delight in name calling / labelling and then the entire discourse goes downhill. @Guynextdoor is a supreme example of the kind of members here one mustn't emulate . He vomits random words out here and when his own "holy cows" - pun unintended are paraded , he disappears . Net Result - The whole purpose of the thread is defeated .

you should be concerned about all rivers too...imagine all gau in rural India drink water from all these rivers. Your lack of concern for their wellbeing is truly shocking!

yeah...until the industrial revolution put the west in a different orbit altogether.

its not the industrial revolution that put the west into different orbit - it was exploitation of resources from colonies and abundant "free" labor with slavery. get your facts proper mate.
Industrial revolution happened in China and then India before the word industrial revolution was coined - dont agree? how come its the "silk route" and "spice trade" - cos both silk and spices where produces in industrial level to feed the entire world.

no- Industrial revolution did not occur in China or India before it was coined. The use of machine and industrial scale production was definitely pioneered by the west. As was the use of transistors and the information age. Handicraft is not industrial age. Silk Route and Spice Trade belong to that era.

Cool, shave your kid's head and dump it in Ganges. Or simply dump the dead new born there.

Enlightened west didn't showed up here to steal your superstitions. And no, dumping crap in Ganges is not my roots, I will dump these superstitions and primitiveness just like I dumped sati and in process of dumping caste-ism.

Yes. We should dump our superstition and instead of dumping biodegradable hair or mortal remains, we should dump millions of tons of plastics and chemicals !! Did it ever occur to you why Ganga was super clean for thousands of years in spite of all our stupid superstitions and has turned into a gutter only in last 50-60 years??

Check my first post on subject and then come back.

And no, it was never super clean as per current cleanliness standards. People were still dumping mortals and defecating in it.

True and it's deplorable. It highlights our civic sense or the lack of it . But modernity in the form of urbanism , industrial activities , poverty , lack of resources and imagination apart from decisive leadership , sheer willpower , etc have put a severe strain not just on the Ganges but other riverine eco systems as well . Add to that criminal negligence by the Governments & state PCB's . Thoothkodi is a good example of all that's gone wrong whereas your post as well as @Noodler 's clearly highlights the religious disposition and resultant superstitions in built into their value system as not only the prime but sole agents for such pollution - an erroneous and fallacious observation.

lol at what you could comprehend from my post. Now read it slowly again.

First line - a sarcasm at his intent of putting religion solely a culprit.
Second line - A tacit agreement to tha fact that superstions has done a lot bad as well.

So where did you find myself painting religion as "sole" responsible? Did you missed myself saying industrialization and urban waste as major culprit?

Spoon feed:censored:

Agreed. Apologies for my assumptions. Read it as a counter to Noodlers post then .

rivers have natural abillity to cleanse themslves to a certain point as long as the impurities ar organic. of course dumping dead bodies is bad - dumping dead bodies in the thousands is worse.

when you say "superstitions" i request you to tread a bit with knowledge that some of these so called "superstitions" actually are good examples of sustainable living. we can have a discussion on this separately but to make sure we are all on the same point -all the folks here wan to get the ganga clean. pointing fingers at a religoin or their customs just doesnt cut it. its a waste of time. lets just concentrate on what needs to be done.

My class mates are working in the environment ministry in Orissa and he is sure that in a few years time all water bodies in Orissa are going to be polluted and he is trying hard to stop those.

How about this: can we get live updates on the pollution levels in rivers from India form anywhere you guys live? I can quickly spin up a web application that can be helpful for people to track the progress or regression.

"industrial scale production" - how do you think Chinese could manufacture silk and Indians produced spices to the level that we could export to the entire world? and we dint even pollute the planet doing so.

just because you see fancy machines making stuff (and polluting the entire planet along with it) doesnt make it a revolution.

Please dude, I request you dig deeper. than just bashing the entire country and just glorifying the west. the moment you think everything in one place is bad and everything from one place is good, it only shows your bias.

sometimes the spoon feed is needed. given the enormity of the bias that people spew here - it becomes easy for folks to respond as if all posters have a bias.

my appreciation for taking time to explain instead of ranting and derailing!

facy machines making stuff was the industrial revolution. It changed everything. Moved economy away from agriculture (silk produciton and grains) to manufacturing. More importantly it changed the world as we know it. Stemers (result of this) reduced the linkage between countries and reduced travel times. And so on. These are the facts. During agrarian days countries like India and China dominated for a long time. Industrial revolution was moved forward by west.
