Indian Political Discussion

I certainly hope he gets his just desserts. A few years in prison. But given his age & condition, he'd kick the bucket much before this & other cases reach the trial stage.

I have no special love for Pawar saheb save for as an elder statesman.

He's certainly never done anything for us Marathas.

But I'll be honest, unapologetically. I would hate for the present gujju lobby to take down a Maharashtrian leader of his stature.

Cheers, Doc

He is the richest Politician in India. Even more than Gandhi family. Second is Chiddu and after that comes Gandhis. Chiddu could have made more money but he loved bollywood actresses. And anyone asking for a favour had to either meet his demand for money or get him the heroine of his choice. The other person fond of heroines was P Patel.
Well, Sharad Pawar is rumoured to have tipped off Dawood Ibrahim thru his associates and helped him escape to Dubai . He's maintained ties with him since. Forget about him being the richest Indian politician, he must be the richest Indian ever for all you know surpassing Mukesh Ambani by miles. He's rumoured to have financed many smaller political outfits.

When Dhirubhai Ambani was getting too big for his boots and interfering blatantly in the political scenerio tangling with every political party worth the name to show his clout viz : sponsoring SS Vaghela's rebellion against the BJP in the late 90's & offering his services to Vajpayee & Advani as an honest broker which was turned down, Pawar cut him down to size by embroiling the Reliance group in an attempted murder case of Muslims Wadia at the height of his tussle with Dhiru Ambani in the late 80's .

We must thank our lucky stars he didn't become the PM and PVNR was instead chosen else he'd have sold India down the river. Sunil Dutt and his son Sanjay Dutt paid a heavy price for siding with PVNR instead of Pawar.

On the contrary his entire constituency is Kunbi / Marathas / Muslims / others. He's done a lot for Baramati & Western Maharashtra.

he hasnt done anything for western Maharashtra except his city of Baramati , he illegally transferred gallons of irrigation water to his farms.
He is definitely the richest politician in the world probably ,he aided Dawood to escape in a private plane when he was the CM.
Nevertheless his political brain is unmatched and Sonia Gandhi ruined his dream of becoming the PM.
But his era is ending , NCP has lost a huge base in Maharashtra
And another politician late Deshmukh was also one of the richest. Some say he had wells filled with cash and trucks used to carry his black money

Its a sad demise. One more moderate voice gone from the top echelons of the BJP.

True , Pawar was a maratha but didn't do anything for them , he could have worked for maratha reservation but didnt. Atlast BJP government did it

He is a politician first and then a Maratha.

None of us buy the Maratha strongman tag he carries.

That was his chance.

Cheers, Doc

Put another way, all those MIDC's that you see in Maharashtra , particularly Western Maharashtra is due to Pawar, viz Ranjamgaon, Chakan, Pimpri Chinchwad, Aurangabad, etc. So were the many dairy & sugar mills dotting Western Maharashtra. Ditto for all those medical & engineering colleges followed by those management colleges too.

It's another matter that in case of dairy, sugar mills and educational institutions, the management largely consists of politicians especially of the ruling party which happened to be the Congress (I) , Congress (S) followed by its later avataar the NCP. It's also another matter that Pawar didn't set the trend which was initiated by his mentor Y.B.Chavan , taken forward by Vasantdada Patil among many others but accelerated largely by Pawar.

It could also be argued that since Mumbai was & is the financial capital of India, Maharashtra would always be a magnet for industrial activity and as a corollary educational institutions. Similarly, it can be argued that Pawar and the others could also have proved incompetent effete and lazy and Squandered away these advantages, which he & the rest didn't. The same argument applies to Modi and Gujarat albeit Modi left Gujarat in a much better shape economically and industrialization wise than Pawar did / will Maharashtra. All you've to do is look at the example of UP, undivided Bihar and especially WB to understand what I'm driving at. The latter had a very high level of industrialization apart from Maharashtra in the first 2-3 decades following independence. UP & Bihar were well governed states at least in the first 2 decades following independence although their industrial base left much to be desired. And then the rot set in.

There were a number of industrial houses present then who called WB their home. Some Still do.Cal was a cosmopolitan city in ways Bombay could never be. Look at where they are today. Arguably Mumbai isn't doing better but it's still leagues ahead of Cal.

Triple Talaq, Article 370. Uniform Civil Code next?

HIGHLIGHTS :
  • The reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir is set to sail through Parliament with Rajya Sabha having passed it on Monday
  • The success came less than a week after the contentious bill to ban instant triple talaq and make it punishable breached the numerical and ideological barrier in the Upper House

NEW DELHI : BJP’s political agenda of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, scrapping Article 370 and adopting a Uniform Civil Code(UCC) has for several decades seemed like a statement of intent that did not have much chance of being translated into reality.

Not so now. The reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir is set to sail through Parliament with Rajya Sabha having passed it on Monday.

The success came less than a week after the contentious bill to ban instant triple talaq and make it punishable breached the numerical and ideological barrier in RS. Suddenly the possibility of a UCC — though by no means an easy task — does not appear as unachievable. Almost certainly, more aspects of personal laws are likely to be taken up for scrutiny, marking incremental progress towards UCC.

The Ayodhya issue is now in its final leg, with the Supreme Court beginning day-to-day hearings on the title suit from Tuesday. Despite its sensitive religious and political overtones, the issue may well be heading for a finale.

Passage of the resolution to ratify the presidential order that makes Article 370 a dead letter gives BJP strong traction in a growing constituency which is drawn to its nationalist and Hindutva agenda. It is a big success that helps validates BJP’s political vision that it has presented as an alternative to Nehruvian secularism.

The Modi government anticipates that the path ahead in J&K will be very challenging, but is convinced that the political logjam in the state needs radical measures that will serve to attack the “separateness” that Article 35A and Article 370 have bred.

Home minister Amit Shah was instrumental in winning over several parties. Many felt the ground had shifted and the public pulse was definitely in favour of abrogating Article 370. Party sources said Shah began his preparations more than a month back as he reached out to party leaders and convinced them about supporting pending legislation. Parties like BJD, TRS, YSRCP and TDP all voted in favour of the J&K Reorganisation Bill that saw BJP succeed in pushing through legislation that seemed a bridge too far not long ago.

“The government’s decision in relation to Article 370 is a monumental decision towards national integration. What was a temporary and transient provision cannot be treated as permanent. It had to go,” senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley tweeted.
