INS Vikrant (IAC1) & INS Vikramaditya - News & Discussions

And here am I, thinking SSNs are a counter to CBGs.
From the few hints I picked up throughout the year, think some well hidden work is going on in that front. Not just the core program, also comm, aip work, power supply etc. Hence I am a bit relaxed on that front & rather want to focus on the visible part of the deterrent, that is our own CBG ability. China is very much into visible show of aggression.

One example below, it should read NSTL.

My confusion totally lies on how INS vikrant will counter Type 003? My point was that an Anti ship missile is not a counter to another Anti ship missile.

Its a SAM.

Aircraft Carriers for us mean something else.

We already have duties to patrol the EEZ of Mauritius and Seychelles in southern IOR. Those two are probably the island chains where we enjoy better Strategic relationship than China does.

We have duties to ensure Straits of Hormuz remain open and so does Malacca for our trade lines.

Further we need to keep in mind the contribution of INS Vikrant during operations in 1971.

Maybe when we think about going a 4th and 5th Carrier, that would be to venture out of IOR. That would be to counter China in Chinese backyards.

A 2nd INS Vikrant sized ship won't do anything to counter Chinese CBGs. But it will do a lot of other very important duties.

What I suggested is based on our CBG countering theirs when chinky encroach into IOR & all the important places you mentioned. Much like our borders, this is the only counter we need , we will not engage them like the way us navy does. But for that, a visible moving cbg is good force projection, which we might lack unless IAC2 comes. If we see china island expansion & sea routes, this is a major concern that they will almost certainly encroach in IOR. So we need something similar for the faceoff. It will be just the faceoff, but it needs to be done with both subs, ssn or not, and cbg both.

See the INS Vikrant -2 as a pre mature replacement for INS Vikramaditya. The latter is struggling to do it's share of patrolling as of today. What do you think it's going to be like by 2030 ?

Besides our CBGs as they do exist aren't a counter to the PLAN CBGs. For that we have our CMs, LshBMs, SMART torpedo, A&N based MKIs with Brahmos & hopefully an AshBM , the P-8i's along with our 2 x Akula class SSNs which should hopefully be ready by 2030 & the Scorpenes with perhaps 1 x indigenous SSN.

This is precisely why Navy is going for another Vikrant class carrier. Excellent analysis👍

If at all we need to take care of a CBG of China, we will need SSNs and Brahmos launchers on coast or Su30MKIs.

The Mig29 cannot carry a Anti ship missile big and fast enough that a salvo fire may disable a Carrier sized target.

I had shared in SSN thread (post 263-265) on the forum that the two hulls offered to India, both have been found totally junk. Unfit to go under modernisation.

Currently no Akula hull is under modernisation in Russia for India.
Haven't we signed a contract with them? So what are we getting then? Plus There were reports we'd be going in for one more . What happened to that?

Yep, we paid. That's why I had asked in that thread that is there a refund option 😅

But on a serious note, I think given the huge sum involved, if other submarines won't be fit enough, we should be able to get Nerpa refurbished and up for service again by 2024-25. I think that's why we have sent it a year earlier.

1 SSN should be there by 2025. Let's wait for spring. We should have an update on various hulls and their status by mid next year.

It's already more than 3 yrs since we've signed the contract. We should've been half way thru the refurbishment & on course to sign a contract for another SSN. Why the delay in identifying usable hulls?

I asked someone in Russian Defence Forum, they did confirm that they do have a contract to refurbish 1 SSN for India. It was in Nov 2021 I think.

After 2022 Feb, I haven't been able to contact any of the usual guys on that forum. Lets see. That's all we can do.

Hopefully funds for 1st 3 Desi SSN are cleared soon.
