Outside the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar, 56-year-old Surinder Mahato desperately waits for a bus to take him to Jammu from where he will have to make a long journey to his village in Motihari, Bihar. Clutching Rs 462 in his hand, the bus fare between Srinagar and Jammu, he has been told that the bus service will resume later in the day.
It is the third day in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and thousands of migrant labourers from Bihar are fleeing Kashmir Valley after facing threats from local Kashmiris. The previous night a few of them landed up at Mahato’s room and asked him to leave. “They were hurling abuses at me and asked me to leave; they said they will kill me otherwise,” he said. On August 7, till 11.15 am, 40 buses had already left for Jammu. On August 6 also, thousands of them left for Jammu. In the absence of transport, many of them had to walk for hours to reach the railway station on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Mahato has been coming to Kashmir for 25 years. Most migrants like Mahato works as daily-wage labourers here. They prefer Kashmir because of its cooler summer-time climate. On an average they earn between Rs 500-600 per day. “If I work in Punjab, I am able to save less and send about eight thousand rupees per month. From Kashmir I can send almost double that amount,” says Abdul Ghaffar, a labourer from Bihar’s Supaul district. He doesn’t know if he can return to Kashmir now. He claimed that from Supaul alone, about one lakh labourers have been coming to Kashmir every year to work.

Several migrants who were waiting for the bus said their payments were stuck and they had to leave without their wages. On August 6, 25-year-old Aslam, another labourer from Bihar, was beaten up by a few locals in the HMT area in Srinagar. “They took away my bag and said: Bhaago Bihari idhar se (Run away from here, Bihari),” he said. His employer owes him several thousand rupees as wages. But scared about their safety, Aslam and many of his other friends chose to leave without collecting their earnings. Anil, another migrant labourer, said he was threatened as well. “One Kashmiri came to me the previous night and said if I see you tomorrow, I will beat you up and burn you with kerosene oil,” he said. Chote Lal, who was trying to return to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh said some people threw stones on their dwelling and threatened him and others to run away, failing which they will be cut into pieces.
As they waited for their turn, two Kashmiris stopped to hear them speak. One of them looked at the labourers and shouted: “Sabka saath, sabka vikaas.”

Yes, this is all that is left to be done by them. Reverse dossier game.Pakistan should send a dossier to Endia enumerating all its grievances with proof.
Thank you.
Personally, has made no difference to me, except a feel of pride that someone cares finally. Am beyond the age of being jingoistically happy for things like these. Have paid enough price to not need to prove to anyone how Indian, we border-wallahs are. Born an Indian and continue to be a staunch Indian at heart and in my actions, lived under cross border firing growing up, no one outside the state has even a remote context of the challenges we face as border residents and that still continues. so, when I speak to anyone from mumbai or delhi about how they care about J&K and then realise how little they know about that part of the country, i just move on.
The move is a bold one, but done in a massive and clumsy haste (like so many recent law introductions) and I feel it is done in an unconstitutional way, so will be stuck down by the supreme court anyways.
Also, the govt is making it worse by trying a propaganda of everything is ok in valley and then stopping Azad from entering the city when he lands there. India and our administration have been more elegant on such things in our past.
What many are simply not appreciating is, what will happen in valley when valley opens up and everyone in India (including us Jammu folks) being OK with valley citizens being locked up only will make them lose any faith that we see them as equals and humans. The reaction will come from Valley and this adminstrations handing will only play into the hands of those the want to turn it into an international humanitarian crisis. Congress does not represent modern India or our aspirations, neither does NC or PDP of the average kashmiri - So that noise does not distract one... But, am afraid we have played straight into a right wing vs right wing battle and that, I believe, we could have avoided, while we face a massive recession economically and while we could have addressed jobs issue for Kashmiris (and for us poor jammu people as well) before uncorking this Genie that will come out now.
I know this is not at thread about kashmir... so, will limit myself at only these summary points
It has not been done in haste but over a period of five years. BJP formed govt in J&K with PDP for just this very purpose. They knew she will make funny demands and they agreed to them after extracting their pound of flesh. You probably do not know that in last four years, PDP accepted replacement of constituent assembly with elected assembly and after that replacing elected assembly with Governor and finally letting Indian Parliament act as the assembly for J&K when the assembly is suspended. All this was done thru Presidential orders. BJP created this ground to abrogate 370 & 35A.Thank you.

Curfew was withdrawn from Srinagar last night. There is no curfew in Jammu and Ladakh.Pakistan can stop whatever they like.. They an an irrelevant, bankrupt state. It shouldn't and won't affect India.
But please do remember that we also have Kashmiris under lockdown.. they deserve to express their solidarity or anger (whatever that is) and participate in this debate... they are as much citizens as any of us.
