LCA Tejas Mk1 & Mk1A - News and discussions

Okay.Breaking my self imposed forum quarantine to post this.
India Seeks Local Warplanes as Overseas Purchase Plan Stalls
:love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love::love:

India is anyway set to order 83 .. Mk1A

They delayed so much that if don't order now and bought foreign toys, every one will question them.

If the order is increased above 83 , I ll accept their sincerity for truly buying only Indian weapons.

This is just a PR exercise for what would happen eventually.

They are counting the 83 mk1a which already had obtained CCS clearance as "more".
There seems to be some confusion regarding the headline & the content of the article. A member posted much the same content from Bloomberg y'day. Unless this means we're going in for 83 more LCA - Mk1 followed by 83Mk1a.

Yes, it clearly says 40 already ordered + 83 new.

Irrespective of MMRCA-2 tender we will be buying more jets of that category. It's not CDS's call, Just like IAC-2 it will remain an opinion.

Not the CDS's call? Why exactly was the post created then? As a gubernatorial posting for Gen Rawat?

Every service chief can & will voice their requirements & objections but the last word on it would be that of the GoI / RM / MoD in consultation with the CDS.

No. CDS is Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister (only on tri-services matters). On services matters its still fully under respective chiefs. He does not have authority over other chiefs. Its always up to the political class to take the final call.

but then he can surely fill MoDs/PM ears on whether respective chiefs are taking right call or not considering military goal along with nation's economy

Yes, it's possible. But, can MoD/PMO go fully against service chiefs? Public statements of displeasure from them will hurt the government. There has to be a middle ground.

Services are cognisant of the state of the economy. They are only getting 20-30% what they ask. The problem here is a lack of direction. We need a well-thought-out national security strategy.

White paper and all round external and internal threat assessment should be done every 5 years and released publicly.

so one can say whoever out of 4 is more popular among people and also among home minister, PM and defence minister has more say in dubious yet important procurements .....

HAL isn't back full throttle.
The priority is getting the 2nd squadron of LCA up coz that will make news and will prove handy for HAL to get the Mk1A contract.

Meanwhile ADA/HAL have to get the canon issue fixed and twin seater certified.

Can someone please recap the additional features/modifications expected in LCA MK1A? I have the following list based on past discussions:
  • EL/M 2052 AESA Radar (later batched might have UTTAM)
  • ELL-8222WB Jamming pod (to be carried on outboard pylon)
  • New internal digital RWR developed by DRDO (Analog RWR already in MK1 - IOC/FOC)
  • New mission computers
  • In-flight refueling probe (already in MK1 - FOC)
  • Dual rack for CCM (to be carried on outboard pylon)
  • New BVR missiles - ASTRA and/or Derby ER
  • New CCM missiles - ASRAAM (to be decided), Python-5 (Integrated but vibration test failed on MK1)
  • Updated Cockpit with 3 new Smart MFDs
  • Structural - maintenance related updates such as repositioning of LRUs, interchangeable panels etc. (Some of these have already been incorporated in MK1 - FOC ?)
  • Aircraft weight reduction by around 1000 KGs including redesigning the over-engineered landing gear for weight reduction (not sure if this possible)
  • A new canopy with 24 mm thickness (as opposed to 16mm currently on MK1)
Some questions:
1) Is the empty weight of the aircraft expected to be reduced?
2) Are new supersonic drop tanks being designed for MK1A/MK1?
3) Will IOC variants be upgraded to FOC?
