I wouldn't write of the Su 57 program, if I were you. We haven't even begun ours yet. Let's see how well we surmount the problems other players have faced. @randomradio
mere baap pehle aap.
For sure. In the heavy fighters, Su30 will be replaced by the bottom by AMCA, and by the top by Su57.
The AMCA's were supposed to replace the Mirage 2000 & the MiG 29. LCA were supposed to replace the MiG 21 & Rafales the Jaguars. However, with LCA Mk2 morphing into the MCA, I'm not sure what will AMCA's replace. Moreover, there's a case to be made for an indigenous Heavy Weight Fighter ( HWF) program to be initiated between 2025-30 timeline to replace the Su 30 MKI. The requirement for the Su 57 is altogether for a different purpose. I think it's more to do with combatting Chinese 5th generation FA & to give us a feel & experience with 5th generation FA.For sure. In the heavy fighters, Su30 will be replaced by the bottom by AMCA, and by the top by Su57.
In the medium fighters, Rafale.
In the light, LCA, LCA2....

Time to morph the AMCA into AHCA ?
In all probability, the future itirations of AMCA would be the HCATime to morph the AMCA into AHCA ?
What's the connection between the 2? Haven't you been following the progress of this program? The Mk1a was initiated as a compromise and via media to get the IAF on board fully for further iterations of the LCA by MP when they complained that the Mk1 was sub optimal. Mk1a was always supposed to be an intermediate stage before the definitive Mk2 / MCA came out.First let them make MK 2 ,rather MK 1A

PKS is now spinning this into something new. He's claiming there's going to be no Mk1a but SPORT with certain modifications is going to come in for Mk1a.
This is something they should have decided back in 2007 itself.
And we should have gone for the development of a more modern variant of the Su-30MKI instead, but too late for all that now.

How was the IAF to know the Russians would take us for a ride back in 2007? This is 20/20 vision speaking.

I agree with you that we ought to have commenced our Super Sukhoi program at least 4-5 years ago. It still isn't late.
Below is what I have copied from BR regarding Su 30 upgrade

Overhaul is a given.
What we do have in our local/imported kitty so far are:
- 6 channel RWR to prevent Blanking Eagle eye (on order, in induction) and DR118 (trials)
- HBJ pod to replace Russian/Israeli jammers (status awaited)
- MAWS (ready for fitment, trials?)
- i-Derby ER (order yet to be placed)
- ASRAAM (2x Su-30s modified as testbed, initial integration work cleared, orders yet to be placed)
- Brahmos (orders placed)
- Spice 2000 (being added)
- Desi weapons - all in development but which will make a radical change to the Su-30: PGHSLD (450/500kg), GPS bombs (500kg/1000kg), Glide bombs (500kg-1Ton, 30km-100km range), NGARM, Rudra M2, SAAW
- New avionics architecture + 2x wide area displays (DARE has proposal ready)
- Software defined radio (orders placed, to replace/supplant existing Russian radios which are capable but lower bandwidth etc).
Additional "missing" items:
- New IRST (program for domestic one has merely received DAC clearance)
- Radar upgrades, run to Russia (which ideally IAF should have funded LRDE for, to at least progress domestic capability for the future)
- Engine upgrades (Russians are putting in 117S variants into Su-30 SM)
- New weapons from Russia e.g. VRLAAM for AWACS etc (RVV-BD, 300km range)
- Towed decoy package (a bunch available) + expendable decoys (eg Brite Cloud)
So, what's the difference between the 2? Doesn't modernizing also come under the MLU? And if there's a difference what's the difference?I've already mentioned most of this. Anyway, this is about the MLU, whereas I was talking about the MKI's modernisation back in 2010. All old stuff, so no point discussing.
