Rafale DH/EH of Indian Air Force : News and Discussions

Either another batch (between 36 and 48) or first batches of a Make in India larger contract. No clue. Butthe fact that parts and portions made in india are now certified is -to me- a very positive sign.

Yep. The CDS is open to cancelling the pointless MMRCA tender and giving tranche orders to Dassault for the Rafales.

Make in India or flyaway is apparently going to be up to Dassault. HAL doesn't want an alternate producer than them, so they are doing their best to kill any local production plans that doesn't involve them. They realise they can't compete with a private player in the long run.

I do hope Dassault builds in India though. This may increase the chances the GoI will order more in order to keep those jobs in India long term.

Oil prices have dropped and will remain low for another year till US does something funny to shore up the price to help shale oilers. This coupled with bumper crop in India, clearly means some new orders for weapons.

Even very low oil prices are a problem because we export refined petroleum.

Also I find it unlikely for us to buy more Rafales this year, the initial fleet is yet to arrive in India. The money is better spent buying stuff for the army. There's also the LCA Mk1A orders that are pending, along with some MKIs and Mig-29s.

My earliest estimate for the next batch to be ordered is 2022-23. In the meantime, there will be negotiations of course, which can start anytime.

I did not say more Rafale, I stated more weapons. India maintains a refining value added to the petro exports. This refining margin is fixed irrespective of the cost of crude. So the profit margins from exports remain unaffected.

It will follow the same route as Su-30 MKI except for the mandatory "Make in India". However, if Dassault choose to build them in India, it will close all options of criticism by opposition. The order by tranches definitely suits India's defence budget and doesn't raise any eyebrows since the future order values are excepted to be lesser than the first one.

It doesn't just suit the defence budget, but also capability.

Meaning, we don't have to keep ordering the same version even in 2040, because that's how our procurement rules are right now. It's quite pathetic. With tranche orders, we can order newer versions as they come in. The Su-30SM was introduced in 2014 in Russia as a more advanced version of the MKI and is now being upgraded to a new version called Su-30SM1 with a new radar and engine. But the IAF is still taking deliveries of a version that was configured back in 1996.

For Dassault, it makes financial sense to MII because there is a 20% drop in production costs in India, which is massive. And they can use the same infrastructure to make business jets when Rafale orders dry up.

According to Rajnath Singh the first 4 Rafale will arrive in India by May 2020. After that it will be one Rafale every 45 days.
That means the rest of the 32 Rafale will take 32x45 days or 4 years to get delivery.
So the 36 Rafale will be with Indian Air force by mid 2024.
By that time PAF will already have 40+ Thunder Block-3 with AESA radar and possibly PL-15 , and continue inducting more.
So what supremacy IAF will get with Rafale?

For your Jf-17, we will have 50+ LCA Mk1A with AESA and 160km range Astra Mk2 by 2024.

11/year.

The JF-17 Block 3 with AESA and PL-15 will match the 20-year-old MKI with the Derby ER, and that's only when it comes to radar and missile, and not performance, which the JF-17 suffers from, never mind all the other avionics. I'm afraid there's a 20-year difference between IAF and PAF, no matter what PAF's propaganda says.

You are really comparing the JF-17 with the Rafale? There's nothing even planned in the PAF inventory that compares with the Rafale.

Read again the deal still needs cabinet approval.
IAF to acquire 83 Tejas fighter jets for $5.4bn from HAL

Shouldn't matter a lot. HAL will get the order in a month or two.

Su 30mki upgrade will happen, Jf 17 won't squeak after that.
