Some day I hope to see a proper, globally well-respected rifle coming out of the hands of an ethnic Indian from India that the military will also be happy to buy and use. Then comes all the exotic designs.

Just wondering from technology product standpoint even from the private sector which Indian products are global segment leaders?
Obviously nothing. Everybody's just reinventing the wheel right now.
But we seem to have done wonders in comm systems. For example, IIRC, Tata is the only company with a fibre-optic submarine capable system with global connectivity. But that's only ownership, not their own tech.

Jio says they have come out with 5G tech, but we will know for sure only after they incorporate it within their own network. Could very well become our national champion.
When it comes to military tech, I can think of two systems that may not have challengers in their segments anytime soon. That's ATAGS and QRSAM. Both are in a class of their own right now.

While the new SIG 716 would be a major step up from the INSAS, should IA have gone with a AR pattern rifle with a gas piston instead of a DI ?
Except for some weight difference, a DI rifle seems to run hotter and get dirtier requiring more maintenance over a gas piston rifle .

DI usually is much more accurate too compared to piston guns. But it won't matter much to a standard army jawan. And if our soldiers could use the junk Insas with all its problems the sig would serve the IA much better than the Insas ever could .Also it does not look like an abomination. What we should be worried about is the sights and attachments which the IA will take another 10 years to get for the sig...

Magazine failures caused 239 of the M4's 882 failures. Army officials said the new magazines could be combat-ready by spring if testing went well.[57] The Army began issuing an improved STANAG magazine in March 2009

Funny that your quoted a WWII 9mm pistol, I dont know if you were referring to the Auto 1A but from ofbindia's website they no longer even make the "Pistol 9mm 1A", which is a travesty ... that was the best product ishapore made.
Even today a Glock 19 retails for $530 whereas a Browning Hi Power retails for $1190, almost twice. None of the stock wonder 9's at this point are as valuable as the Hi power, not the CZ75, not the Berreta 92fs, not the glock or the sig p226.
Although Auto 1A which is a licensed copy of the Hi-Power (Inglis) might be of WWII vintage, it's one of those rare things that stand the test of time till now. I really hope they resurrect the Hi Power with a double stack and offer it to law enforcement; if nothing re engineer the thing to take 9mm makarov or 380acp and introduce it to the civilian market , if not export the stock as surplus to US or something. Remember this is one of the rare firearms to be adopted by Waffen SS, British SAS and even the US OSS. Writing all this stuff about the Hi Power makes me want to have one now.

Looks like a good effort.
But the greatest hurdle to cross through is getting the orders.
Hope somebody at the top can help all those indigenous products to get a chance in getting orders.
Otherwise it will also line up in perpetual waiting list.

I don't recall that well but I've heard Ordnance Factories actually can no longer export firearms to civilian markets abroad, at least not without exhaustive government clearances. A lot of the bolt action Ishapore 2A1s you can find in US are actually bought off in bulk (lumped together with other weapons, items etc.) from countries like Nepal.
The Inglis HP and SMLEs in .308 can find many takers in civilian market in West. However enterprise is not to be expected from OFB.
