A plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been foiled by his country’s armed forces thanks to a tip off by Russia’s Federal Security Services (FSB) who “didn’t want to take part in this bloody war”, Ukraine has said.

An elite group of Chechen special forces, known as Kadyrovites, had sought to “eliminate” the Ukrainian leader but were “destroyed” on Tuesday night, according to Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council chief Oleksiy Danilov.

“We are well aware of the special operation that was to take place directly by the Kadyrovites to eliminate our president,” Mr Danilo said, according to a Telegram post written on Tuesday by the Center for Strategic Communications.

Of course there is, it will just take more to transport it. It's not like Russia has a monopoly on gas. Gas can be gotten from Saudi Arabia, UAE, North Sea and North America. It will cost money to transport and the effects will be 'not nice'. Meanwhile the effects for Russia, which is dependent on oil and gas for its economy and maintaining its nuclear arsenal will be insurmountable.

If you've been following Western politics there has already been a strong point of view put forward by the US that the US should be getting gas from the US not Russia, and this was before the invasion of Ukraine.

And more recently.

Well it looks like its going nuclear then because we are not having Russia tanks and jets on the Western border of Ukraine within a few miles of NATO countries. You can bet your bottom dollar on that. The only question is how long it will take Russia, and how many lives they will lose reaching the point where we finally kick their heads in.

About the oil from UAE and Saudi, they already realised that their strategic position and importance increased and started making some noises.

Us policy of treating Arab allies like shit and not caring about their security interests may come back biting the US in this juncture. West need Arabs more than ever now.

We're talking about Europe not the US getting gas.

And Russia clearly isn't an option for them given that their main regional adversary is Iran.

I don't think you understand the scale of this endeavour. We are talking about 150bcm of gas. It's 40% of Europe's supplies.
It looks like Norway and the UK will be providing a lot more then. Lot of jobs in there too. Strategic reserves in the meantime. Meanwhile Russia's economy goes to crap. China would already be buying Russian gas, if it were cheaper.

And let's face it, Putin isn't doing as well as he expected in Ukraine either. He expected to be done by about 5 days ago.

This meltdown of Brits is a real treat to watch . It's 00:00 GMT & Paddy's venting as if UK is under attack .🤣

This tells you Putin's stepped on their balls & is not relenting on the pressure. The more the pressure the louder the squeals !!🤣🤣

Btw - I've never seen Paddy out here so late . Hope you've taken Mommy dearest's permission to be out here , Paddy ?

Makes one wonder when news of Russian military being overconfident , underperforming , poorly trained conscripts , being pummeled by Ukranian resistance etc are doing the rounds , why're elected US lawmakers coming out with rabid statements like this .

Only goes to show US impotence is gnawing them from the inside & if Afghanistan gave us a peek into it , Putin has pretty much exposed it for the world to see .

They are worried about the situation in Yemen. Once sanctions are lifted on Iran, it's gonna get really uncomfortable in the ME. The long term potential of Iran also scares them, with matters being made worse because Russia, China and India are giving more importance to Iran due to its geography.

Doesn't look like you have all the facts, as usual. There are no strategic reserves, the EU is creating one now.

The European Commission is set to propose the creation of an EU-wide voluntary strategic reserve for natural gas that would enable stable supplies of the fuel for the whole bloc amid soaring energy prices.

In order to prevent future supply shocks and reduce dependence on Russia, the government plans to establish strategic coal and gas reserves.

And current storage levels are at 30%, with the aim to boost it to 80% or more for the winter using mostly Russian gas.
According to data from Rystad Energy, northwest European storage levels are around 10% below 2021 volumes. Europe-wide storage remains at a five-year low of 32.6% full, Gas Infrastructure Europe data showed.

A European Commission draft proposal, obtained by the Financial Times, will set a target for 80 per cent of storage capacity to be filled by September 30, up from 29 per cent now.

Norway says they are topped up, can't provide more. In 2014 they said they cannot do it, and they repeated the same in 2022.

Those are some weird standards. Who set the time limit?

Europe got suckered by the Americans into a stupid conflict and a stupid economic situation.
