Not might, Western world actively supported military junta regimes against democratic governments whose priorities didn't align with Western world prioritise. There is ample evidence for this. Not saying Ukraine should have been invaded by Russia as that would be Hippocratic position just like Western world hipporcratic activities...

Yes, in the Cold War the West took hard positions against local countries tending towards Communism, and the evidence is that none of those that chose it remained democratic.
Don't know many in Europe that thought that TBH. I've always seen Russia and China as being joined at the hip.
