My guess is Iran deliberately didn't target the populated areas on the base. Both parties are trying to find a way out.

US should start testing F35s in a real conflict

Maybe they could test against Iranian SAMs but not in air-to-air combat since Iran still operates a bunch of vintage fighter jets

I think US has put their troops stationed in Iraq at big risk with their action to kill soleimani. If Iran backed militia lays seige to the airbase where US forces are stationed then things will get more dangerous.
