Indigenous Cruise Missile System With ‘Manik’ Turbofan Engine Test-Fired Off Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar: India’s first Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) with domestic small turbofan engine Manik and upgraded radio frequency seeker was test fired from a defence facility from launchpad No- 3 of ITR Chandipur in Odisha’s Balasore district.

According to sources, the performance evaluation of the new engine is on and details are awaited.

Designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) laboratory Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) in Bengaluru, the ‘Manik’ STFE is a bypass engine of 400 kgf thrust class. It is designed to propel ‘Nirbhay’ ITCM, a two-stage missile fueled by a solid rocket motor booster developed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL).

According to DRDO, the STFE engine is a generic twin-spool engine without an afterburner. It is an expendable, single-use, short-life turbofan engine comprising various modules.

Of the three earlier tests of the ITCM conducted since 2020, two have failed and one achieved ‘partial success’.

In October 2020, a test had to be aborted after the system deviated from the pre-coordinated flight path. A year later, the DRDO held its first ‘partially’ successful test of the Manik engine as the engine performed per its requirement but the missile system could not travel the desired range reportedly due to some issues with the control mechanism. In October 2022, the engine developed technical glitches after the initial booster phase, and the missile system plunged into the sea within 30 seconds of the launch, according to India Defence News.

There were notam & sea closure few days ago too during aero India which got postponed as the top officials were busy at the show for 3-4 days. So its normal both tests went on yesterday & today, roughly similar area. Yesterday it was so clear notam was active, planes were avoiding the entire area.

Just hoping that today's test was fully successful as this missile is needed in 1000s to saturate enemy air defence and critical military/infra sectors.

Brahmos is our silver bullet. Very effective but very costly as well.
At best it would be short duration test, to validate the same parameter set in the last failed attempt. The notam area was quite small. Imo Nirbhay was tech demo with Rus engine, based on it ITCM being developed as sort of tech demo with indigenous engine (ie a middle ground). Based on ITCM success possibly mission mode project LRLACM will proceed, which is the final version to be delivered to the military.

Nirbhay never meant to be a tech demo, it was envisioned to be a desi tomahawk with 1500 km range. The only successful test till date with full range was its second. Rest all are failed one( obviously partial succes in DRDO language ) or tested for 700-750 km range only.
Like Trishul missile program, Nirbhay too an utter failure program. You can easily call a program failure which achieved only 3 successful test out of 7 development trials conducted in past, barring today's test. Out of the three, two test were just above 650 km instead of 1500 km. Thank god, we accepted Trishul program was a failure and didn't achieve its development goals. With passing of time We indians become d!ck head that we are not dared to call a failures a failure & hence started mentioning Nirbhay as technical demonstrator.
