Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missile : News, Updates and Discussions

We could have tried reverse engineering kh59, no news on those Vem tech programs, waghantak etc. This particular one should be our own version that should have seen daylight by now. Hopefully their mou with munition India is for such purpose.

Once our Manik engine becomes fully operational and mature, that should open up so many options for ITCM future derivatives. Which may include our own desi "Storm Shadow" like stealth cruise missile. Designing a stealthy airframe is not going to be a difficult work for our guys.

Turbofan engines, both small and large, remain the biggest fly in the ointment for us.

So it is indeed Hypersonic Missile that was Tested... Will give severe Heart Burn to our Enemies Pakistan and China and even some Western countries especially US... 😊
If it touches speeds of upto Mach -5 , how's it hypersonic ? IMO we're simply getting carried away . Our hypersonic program is proceeding on track . We haven't reached there yet though we'd get there by the end of the decade if not before.

When the CMD Brahmos himself has gone on record during AI-23 , stating we'd take 7 yrs from date to develop a hypersonic version plus we've it from fairly reliable sources the Russians would share Zircon technology after 2027 , where did this hypersonic missile come from ?

Even a 'near hypersonic' Brahmos is pure terror for our enemies. You're correct, a full on hypersonic Brahmos(Zircon) is coming only post 2027. But even if current Brahmos hits aprox. Mach 5 for few seconds in cruise or terminal phase, its kinetic impact and ability to evade IADS would increase by manyfold.

So, this test was very important in that regard.

Sometimes back, there was talk of not only enhancing Brahmos' range to 1000kms, but also enhance its speed from 2.8M to 3.5M to even touch Mach 5 during mid/terminal phase.

Looks like the last target was achieved by our scientists. Awesome news, thanks for posting(y)
@marich01

Thankfully I found the article in which current Brahmos' speed was supposed to be enhanced to Mach 5 by 2022( @randomradio ).

Dr. Sudhir Kumar Mishra said this in 2017:

“Presently, the BrahMos has a speed of 2.8 Mach… in two years time it would be increased to 3.5 Mach, and by five five years, it would be 5 Mach,” said BrahMos Aerospace Pvt.Ltd. (BAPL) Managing Director & CEO Sudhir Kumar Mishra.

Mach 5 is the current limit of the engine and airframe. We need scramjet to breach Mach 5:

Thereafter, to go to hypersonic mode, it is likely to take another seven-ten years as the missiles would graduate from ramjet to scramjet engine, and considering other complex issues of aerodynamic heating, combustion, vibrations, etc, he said.

Looks like finally we've achieved Mach 5 target by 2023(just 3 months extra over 2022 :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: @_Anonymous_ )

That pic posted in previous page, any idea if its a strap on motor or something internal based on dimensions?
This test was to check performance of indigenous seekers & booster. But they should be testing for more range & up the speed to ≤ Mach 5 ASAP. All our enhancement projects need to be taken up on ASAP mode from now on .
priorities I guess. I don't think significant range extension will happen in batches. Currently 400-450km, might go to 600 first.

Trouble is Russia.. You want to be able to manufacture your primary "battle tested" cruise missile even if Russia gets a bit ... busy with their own homes.

I wonder how much of it requires testing... How much of it is actual physical change and how much is software change. @Milspec ?

Yes , you go about it in a graduated manner. I think we're past 500 kms for quite some time now . That would've been tested as soon as we signed on to the MTCR. We should've crossed 600 kms . It's 750 kms ≥ now .
