British/Italian Tempest (GCAP) Fighter : News and Discussion

They were vanilla German leopard 2a4's they will be easily eaten by kornets and rpg 29's. The challenger 2 was much more heavily armoured and still got penetrated by rpg 29's ,the leopard 2a4 are outdated junk in 2020. Atleast t72 have been upgraded to have era leopard 2a4's are literally naked...

The French program is at a higher risk of failing because they have very dubious partners. Both Spain and Germany are the least trusted amongst the EFT partners. And Germany will be the biggest political hurdle when it comes to exports, they don't like exporting weapons to countries that have a high possibility of going to war. Also, both Germany and Spain are incompetent, they do not have anything significant to offer, and if they do end up contributing to the aircraft, then the FCAS will be all the worse for it.

Britain has the best partners, particularly Sweden, although even Sweden has issues selling jets to some questionable countries, including those that can potentially go to war. But both Italy and Sweden have accomplished aerospace industries.

One of the reason why we choose rafale over Typhoon through g2g route is french have no problem in arming it with nukes, such a liberty will not be granted by germany.
Yeah, with Germany partnering with french on sixth gen fighter, such restrictions will be attached with that platform too.
So i think we should partner with Tempest by keeping our eye shut against the reality of being partnering with saab.

The French has the lead id SCAF. All as been cleared about export before inking the deal with germany. It was a key point.

Tempest? where is Tempest, except on a wooden 1/1 scale? The entry date of 2035 is all but realistic.

As LM, the english are now mainly skilled in Marketing and power point, no more on engineering.

Rafale's ability to carry nukes was irrelevant for MMRCA.

Arming nukes on FCAS won't be a problem, but we are not gonna use foreign jets for nuke delivery in the future once AMCA comes in.

We are not gonna partner with either UK or France for either Tempest or FCAS. If needed we will import a small number as a stopgap (without nukes), possibly through a tender, while we design our own MKI replacement after AMCA is done.

Britain's Tempest sixth-generation jet fighter will have high-speed radar, artificial intelligence (AI)

The Tempest Multi-Function Radio Frequency System radar from Leonardo UK should be able to handle 10,000 times more data than existing systems.

Tempest Fighter 11 Nov 2020

LONDON – The companies building the United Kingdom's Tempest sixth-generation fighter aircraft have revealed some of the enabling technologies that be part of the new plane, including a radar system designed to handle as much data per second as a city. New Atlas reports. Continue reading original article
The Military & Aerospace Electronics take:
11 Nov. 2020 --
Under development for the Royal Air Force (RAF), the Tempest will be one of the first sixth-generation jet fighter aircraft. It's designed to complement current combat craft like the F-35 Lightning II and the Typhoon fighters starting in the mid-2030s until the older warplanes are retired in the 2040s.
The stealth fighter will be able to carry hypersonic missiles and control drone swarms, and produce large amounts of electricity so it can power laser weapons.
Along with this, the twin-engine, delta-wing Tempest will have reconfigurable artificial intelligence (AI) and cyber-hardened communications that enable it to act as a flying command and control center, where the pilot acts more as a supervisor than as a dog fighter.
The main partners in the Team Tempest partnership are BAE Systems, Leonardo, MBDA, Rolls-Royce, and the RAF, with hundreds of other high-tech companies and academic institutions also involved. As part of this development, the team is looking at several advanced technologies.

Yes but the latest and best tanks can handle atgm's. For example active protection system and era do increase the survivability by a considerable magnitude. Leopard 2a4 are an 80's design. The same upgrade leopard 2a5 or 2a6 will perform exceptionally well in the same environment because of nera and active protection system.
A vanilla t72 will not be able to handle a second gen atgm but upgrade it with era and active protection system it will easily handle most type of munitions fired against it.
For example the Israeli upgraded Turkish m60 sabras performed much better than the vanilla turkish leopard 2a4's because of the additional armour and era and superior fire control system in pkk insurgency and Syria.

"The reduced size and weight of Leonardo’s new receiver technology, as well as reduced power requirements, means that it will be possible to integrate the sensor into a multi-function array. This concept, one of a number of innovative ideas being considered for Tempest, could see a number of multi-purpose sensors spread around the aircraft, simultaneously sensing and tracking enemy aircraft, incoming missiles and other threats from all directions, while being fully integrated with a forward-facing radar."

The Italian Minister of Defense Lorenzo Guerini, the British Secretary of State for Defence Ben Wallace and the Swedish Minister for Defence Peter Hultkvist signed a trilateral Future Combat Air System Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding on Dec. 21, 2020. The news was disclosed by the Italian Government only few days ago.

It would be foolish to partner up on an aircraft and then not do so. I struggle to think of any historical examples of that even.

Canada and the F-35 comes to mind. They were a Level 3 partner, but decided to cancel a direct order and get their jet through a tender instead, even if the F-35 is bound to win it, considering they are a member of the Five Eyes.

Well a Level 3 partner is barely a partner really. Level 3 is like they supplied some screws or something. That said the F-35 will win.

India was also a partner in FGFA. We contributed $285M and then cancelled it without getting a refund.

In future, Paddy, it'd be prudent on your part to simply admit you aren't aware of things you're unaware of , instead of making authoritative statements & sticking both feet into your mouth right upto your knees & blissfully typing A grade BS away.

Then again, who am I addressing & who am I fooling?

Note to myself - to refrain from asking you anything except technical issues.
