Only temporary mate! This gov's focus is more on long-term goals than short success. Missing a tree for the forest ain't no bad thing. Once MK1As start to get inducted in numbers from next year onwards, IAF's situation shall gradually improve.

In the meantime, I'm still hopeful for a gov-to-gov deal for 90 Rafales with Dassault using the 'Jaguar model' that our new ACM alluded to.

Temporary? Do you know that Mr Modi came to power in 2014. It's been ten years,and they got next term too. And FYI, mmrca2 is still going where,even AK Antony managed to announce who won the mmrca1 tendering process in 7 years.

Rafale even with GaAs radar can do things which MKI even with GaN can't dream of doing. Rafale is the best 4.5 jet by design for a reason.

However, that MKI with this radar will be once again our number 1 air-to-air platform till AMCA MK2 matures, is not in doubt.

Again its seven years away and we definitely need more rafales. A radar wont fix anything related to squadron capability gap.

I suddenly remember a past, when the development of super seven fighter jets, China believes that the schedule set by the Americans is too harsh, it is impossible to complete the design task within the specified time, Grumman surprised that the project delay is not very normal things? We had planned for an extension when we set the timetable.
I think Indian HAL has the same mindset when making relevant plans
At present, it looks like when the US f404 engine can be delivered, and if the supply problem can be eased in the short term, then India may be able to maintain its scale for some time. And at least replace the MIG-21

The Indian defense community has been having a raging debate over indigenization versus modernization through imports. While the IAF has issued a Request for Information for the acquisition of 114 fighter jets under MRFA, there has been no forward movement on it for the last three years.

The force is now awaiting an Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) from the Indian government before floating a tender for the same

So let's get this right. Resident Story Teller pulls out the vision document full of abstractions of intent (which he helped formulate no doubt giving full expression to that talent of his for dreaming eyes wide open ,we've been relentlessly subjected to over the years) , without a trace of quantitative & qualitative analysis , (which for obvious reasons wouldn't be made public) but which RST (given his close proximity to Vayu Bhavan is privy to ) refuses to share out here , holding the mere publication of the document as some sort of vindication of the year of his prediction - 2022.

I suppose when the Chinese come calling , the IAF would be better served waving this vision document at them just as RST is waving it in here as some sort of validation for shooting off his mouth predicting 2022 as the year of deliverance for Indian defence.

It's posts like this which forces me to come here to rebut which was in keeping with that meme on Dhume I shared a while back.

Knowing the way GoI , MoD & the forces operate I wouldn't be in the least suprised if the MRFA comes in the 2030s & deliveries extend to the following decade forming a vital part of fly pasts on Air Force Day , Independence Day & of course Republic Day parades for that is their primary function.

For wars we have the rest.

Based on previously known information, we were supposed to sign a contract for 97 LCA Mk1A this year. So any MRFA program can begin only after that's done. My assumption is MRFA will begin next year.

With the numbers I have posted, combined with existing Su-30s, LCAs and Rafales, we will have 900 jets.

Who knows how many aircraft will be brought to India by this programme,Previous plan has shrunk from over 100 fighters in 2001 to 36,

India has not even done an open tender, and the Indian civilian government has not even approved the project. Now you're really excited about what might happen 10 years from now. Another 36 Rafales in 2030?
