Triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha on Monday, Congress leader says won’t let it pass
AICC general secretary KC Venugopal on Saturday said that the Congress party will not let the passage of the triple talaq bill in its present form in the Rajya Sabha, reports PTI. The Congress leader’s statement comes two days after the contentious bill criminalising instant divorce by Muslim men was passed by Lok Sabha after a heated debate on Thursday.

The bill will be moved by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in Rajya Sabha on Monday. It is expected to face heat in the upper house of the parliament on December 31, as a number of opposition parties had come out against the bill when it was introduced in the lower house on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters in Kochi, the AICC general secretary today said that the Congress would join hands with those parties with which it can ally with to defeat the bill in the present form. He said that 10 opposition parties had come out openly against the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 when it was introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Even the parties, including AIADMK which supports the government on various issues and the Trinamool Congress, have come out openly against the bill, said Venugopal who is also a Congress floor strategist.

Venugopal said stringent provisions like criminalisation of a civil wrong were there in the triple talaq bill and it was not at all acceptable for the opposition parties, including the Congress.

“…The bill will not help empower the women”, Venugopal said while claiming there was no confusion in the Congress-led UPA or party-led UDF in Kerala regarding the bill.

Recalling the passage of the bill in another form in the Lok Sabha in 2017, the Alappuzha MP said the then government could not push the bill in the Upper House due to the stringent opposition from the Congress and other opposition parties.

“That is the reason why the government brought the ordinance and re-introduced the bill again in the Lok Sabha. But the Congress will oppose its passage in the present form in the Rajya Sabha,” he said.

Earlier, the Congress had accused the NDA government of getting the triple talaq bill passed in haste in the Lok Sabha keeping in mind the 2019 general elections. The party has said its provisions were against the Constitution as well as fundamental rights.

The bill criminalising the practice of instant triple talaq was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday, with the government rejecting the contention that it was aimed at targeting a particular community.

The opposition, which had been demanding that the bill be referred to a ‘joint select committee’, staged a walkout when its demand was rejected by the government. The bill was passed by the Lower House with 245 voting in favour and 11 opposing the legislation.

It would now go to the Rajya Sabha for passage and if passed would become the law. Piloting the bill, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said there should be no politics on the bill, stressing that it was not against any particular community.

Describing the passage of the triple talaq bill as a historic step to ensure equality and dignity of Muslim women, BJP chief Amit Shah had demanded an apology from the Congress for decades of injustice.

Blow to Cong: SC asks Ahmed Patel to face trial in connection to Rajya Sabha win
The Supreme Court Thursday asked veteran Congress leader Ahmed Patel to face trial in connection with his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2017 which has been challenged by his rival BJP candidate Balwantsinh Rajput.

The apex court declined to interfere with the October 26, 2018 order of the Gujarat High Court which had said that Rajput's allegations required a trial.

"Let the trial go on," said a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S K Kaul.Patel had challenged the high court order which had dismissed his plea questioning the maintainability of Rajput's election petition.

Rajput in his election petition had challenged the Election Commission's decision to invalidate the votes of the two rebel MLAs. Had these votes been counted, he would have defeated Patel, the BJP leader had contended. The apex court said it will hear Patel's plea next month. It allowed the parties to file additional documents in the matter.

In its order, the bench also said that "as contesting parties have appeared, no notice need be formally issued. List the matters for final disposal in the month of February, 2019. In the meantime, the High Court shall proceed with the trial of the Election Petition". Patel was declared the winner after the Election Commission invalidated the votes of rebel Congress MLAs Bholabhai Gohel and Raghavjee Patel, bringing down the number of votes needed for victory to 44 from 45.

In the election petition before the high court, Rajput also alleged that Patel had taken Congress MLAs to a resort in Bengaluru before the election which amounted to "bribing the voters".In October 2018, the high court for the second time declined to give relief to Patel. Earlier, April 20, it had rejected Patel's plea.

Patel moved the Supreme Court against the April 20, 2018 order, contending that the decision of the poll panel cannot be challenged by an election petition.

The apex court on September 26 asked the Gujarat High Court to decide afresh a plea of Patel challenging the maintainability of a petition filed by Rajput.

The High Court in October dismissed Patel's plea.

On Thursday, senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi along with advocate Devadutt Kamat appeared for Patel in the apex court.Senior advocates Maninder Singh and Satya Pal Jain represented Rajput and other respondents in the matter.

AGP has committed suicide by refusing to co-operate with this act. Shiv sena is next in the line. I have never been a big admirer of Marathas especilly what they did in 1750s when we (Brahmins, Jaats, Gujjars, Sikhs) were fighting to overthrow Mongols and they decided to support them after the death of Aurangzeb. These idiots will never learn their lessons.

50.5% for general category was a reservation in itself. Now BJP has shot its own head by creating a reservation within reservation. I am against this move. I want OBC be converted to EBC=economically backward class.

But I thought BJP was party with a difference and will do away with reservation :(

good try at a sarcastic jibe :)

the first step - create reservation for economically backward (irrespetcive of caste, religion etc).
next step - show how this helps the poor middle class
third - remove the creamy layer from the other reservations

is what I would do. removing reservations for already existing folks will be political suicide

after enjoying preferential treatment, going back to normal feels like depraving of rights - and will be well harped upon by the media for point scoring.

Have you ever heard of Rishi Bhrigu? We worship our lords but we also know how to kick them out of slumber when they do not respond.
This reservation for upper castes by BJP is their Shahbano moment. Rajiv Gandhi unlocked Ram Janambhumi to appease Hindus when he changed the constitution to bow to the demands of Muslim hardliners. Modi did absolute injustice to General class when he went against SC ruling and amended the SC/ST act. Now what he is doing is that he is what Rajiv Gandhi did. Muslims were core voters for congress and so called vote bank politics of muslim appeasement by congress has been replaced by SC/ST appeasement by BJP. They are trying to undo the damage of SC/ST act by this new Jumla. BUT unfortunately for BJP we Upper castes are no fools like muslims. We will teach him a lesson in GE 2019 also if the quote is taken from 50.5% open and unreserved quota.
These *censored*s think that they can fool us.

On the contrary , with this one act, AGP will be resurrected, as a political outfit among the Assamese particularly in the Brahmaputra valley whereas with this act the BJP will emerge as the party of choice amongst the Bengali hindus in Assam with boosted credentials in WB too. The field is then open for the Congress , the TMC and the AUDF to fish for Bengali Muslim votes in Assam & WB w.r.t the TMC.

just accept the fact that BJP will so everythng including increasing reservations to keep power dude. It'll be easier for you because you won't have to face disappointment every time they let you down. I support backward classes reservation - ecoomic reservation looks very vague to me.

The reservations for the SC/ST & the OBC's desperately need an amendment limiting it to 2 generations w.r.t jobs and academics. There's already a pvt members bill introduced by a BJP MP from Vidharbha to this effect w. r. t limiting such reservations to 2-3 generations among the BC/OBC category.

Today we have the data from 2011 census which was based on caste census as well. The total number of SC in India is 22crore, ST is 12 crore, Upper caste is 31crore and others including OBC and muslims is 70 crore making a total of 135 crore. Now see the irony of reservations.
26% of the population has enjoyed 22.5% resrvations for over 70 yrs. And what did others get-babaji ka thullu.

The divided vote has always helped BJP.
