Indian Army seeks 8×8 armoured vehicles

Just two weeks are left for Indian vendors to submit responses to an Indian Army requirement for nearly 200 8×8 armoured vehicles.

The ‘Buy Indian’ RfI for wheeled armoured fighting vehicles reconnaissance and support (abbreviated to WH AFV [R&Sp]) closes on 1 April. It enunciated the need for 198 vehicles for army reconnaissance and support battalions located in the plains of Punjab and Rajasthan, regions along the Pakistani border.

The RfI was released on 22 November 2019. It mentioned the amphibious 8×8 solution ‘should be provided with high mobility, adequate armour protection and [an] armament configuration suitable to destroy enemy tanks and undertake local protection’.

The Indian Army‘s newest Request for Information (RFI) is inviting vendors to submit proposals for 198 8×8 wheeled APCs by February 17 next year, 21stcenturyasianarmsrace.com reports. The vehicles are meant for a reconnaissance and support role in Punjab and Rajasthan. The 20-page RFI lists technical parameters that leave Russia and the US out of the game, as the BTR-82A and the Stryker both fail to match the army’s needs.

Mechanical self-recovery winch fitted at the front of the vehicle

Additional 8 missiles carried inside, along with a portable ATGM launcher
Ballistic protection of STANAG III on the front arc, STANAG II (withstands assault rifles) on the sides, and mine blast protection is STANAG IIb

why can't they order kestrel whap and further improve on it's deficiency if any.

Really?! That's ‘Buy and Make (Indian)’

That's just license production.

Only categories where actual Indian tech and IP are involved are IDDM and Make. Everything else is simply foreign tech painted in Indian colours.

So Buy Global and Buy and Make see foreign companies taking the lead. Whereas Buy Indian and Buy and Make Indian see foreign tech with Indian companies taking the lead.

Buy Indian means Mahindra can sign up with STE to offer Terrex, with some Indian IP and a 40% Indian workshare in production by cost.

Why don't you practice checking the source before making up for your mind for a change?

Russia has proposed to showcase and give first hand operation demonstration of a new 8x8 Wheeled Infantry Fighting Vehicle to Army. Its not derived or based on BTR series.

Among other things open for Army will be a mobile long range SAM system, a short range self contained Air defence to replace Strela 2M and Osa type systems. Guided extended range version of Smerch , heavy duty self propelled mortar, sa24 igla.

L&T FICV ( future infantry combat vehicle ) model

Armed with a autocannon , a coaxial machine gun , 2 ATGM launchers , 4 banks of grenade launchers.

And interestingly what looks like two RWS stations in the rear (possibly either machine guns or APSor both)

I would like the turret to have a larger calibre gun, maybe atleast a 40mm or say a 57mm canon, in IBGs fighting alongside tanks, that will be required. Also a NAG launcher maybe.

I am not saying anything about the roles. I am saying that we spend way more on 18 Harpoons for 4 submarines, than on the development of a cruise missile which could see a production run of 1000 missiles.
Yeah, IN navy atleast should have asks for 650 mm torpedo tubes for P75I ,in order to accomodate brahmos.

And I do agree that our armed forces will go blindly for unnecessary gears, just like IA new obsession with light tanks. Even heavily armored tank itself is getting obsolete slowly, now IA wants lightbtanks, only God know how many lightbtanks will get knocked out innthe first few hours war. Instead IA should spend money on 105mm howitzers & Oshkosh type armored troop carriers in Ladakh.

Light tanks are not a bad idea. It was always needed the problem is that the best light tank is right now with the Chinese so we will have to develop our own or atleast use sprut sd as a base and uparmour it so it can handle the first shot against type 15. Sprut is the only tank that can penetrate the type 15. It's armed with 2a46m5 so svinets 2 is there we just need a decent number and have to work on it. Similar to how the israeli uparmoured there m60 to sabras and there t55's. The faster we realise this the better.
