I am not sure what @sid4587 was afraid of, obviously LM is going to make offers of their own. They chose to participate in the tender and just like the French and Swedish the Americans too will make offers. What's new here ?

If you are worried about LM saying they won't manufacture in India, then I will remind you that Boeing Apaches air frames are being made in India by TASL not Boeing. Just like that LM won't do it themselves but get the TASL to do it for them. What difference does it make ? The employment opportunities generated goes to Indians, this way or that way.

Seems like decision will be made in this term.
I hoped as usual we won't.

Till Mk1A production starts and MWF first flight.

I hope French cut it out with incredible solutions to MWF as offsets and make it mini Rafale.

The contract Brazil signed covers the development of Gripen F also.
nothing very consistent.

Rafale didn't come with a line. Dassault plans to build the line for the next batch.
I say "wil".
The actual batch was too small to justify a line. I don't know if another batch of 36 will be enough for that.... Some In france say yes.
Some years ago the Dassault CEO said he need an order of 90 to built a line. I don't know if it's again the case.

we should be able to reengine Gripen and LCA with Kaveri during mid life upgrade. So it's not a very big problem in the long run.
It's always a big problem. See the Jaguar new engine fail.
In the new fighters the engine and the frame are intimately mixed.

my gut feeling says, single engine and f18 -usa, medium -france, heavy -russia. this is the collaboration we might go.
as an aircraft the F18 would be a better option than the F16/21, esp if the Navy too opts for it. the Super Hornet has room for upgrades over the years. the question will always remain about sanctions. the US really needs to give iron clad guarantees around that. Else, we should get the Mig 35 along with the Rafales.

Depends on whether or not India wants to have a strategic agreement with the USA

That's not really a problem. The problem is the F-21 is not a very good aircraft anyway. If the US owned Gripen E, then it being American wouldn't have mattered.

>>>single engine and f18 -usa,

For the IAF? This won't happen. The other two are already happening.

The only way the F-21 becomes a contender is if the IAF plans to buy all 200+ Rafales through the GTG route in batches of 36. So MMRCA will then focus on single engine while IAF continues buying 36 Rafales every 3 years until 2035. It will be funny if this happens. But in this case, IAF will shortlist Gripen E, Rafale and Typhoon and Gripen E will win by default due to its lower price. F-21 won't even make the shortlist.

Alternatively, MMRCA will go to France.

F/A-18 for the navy is a possibility. But both SH and Rafale-M face the same problem, so once again IN will likely choose Rafale due to commonality with the IAF rather than go for their own independent jet. Also, the Rafale-Ms can be built in India while SH has to be imported. So it's unlikely for SH to be considered in such a situation.

the Super Hornet has room for upgrades over the years.

This is actually where it loses. It doesn't have anymore room for upgrades. The Block 3 is a joke.

Then we will have 5 medium class fighters, F21, F18, Rafale, MWF and AMCA. I don't think it's possible.

If Rafale and MWF are happening, then F-21 and F/A-18 won't.

As much as we do not want to an American fighter in IAF, we will have to pay with something substantial for US to look else where while we keep pounding Pakistan as and when we want. A few Apaches or C130s or P8s wont satisfy the Khan.

I was not talking about navy or air force, i was merely speculating

i was merely speculating industrial partnerships coming out of these three variants. just bcz F18 and F21 uses same company engine. just after howdy modi LM submitting proposal.....this makes me to speculate these things.

Plenty of stuff available to buy from the US. We do not have to restrict ourselves to fighter jets alone.

Industrial partnerships are the criteria to become eligible to participate in MMRCA. So all the companies are forging partnerships only to become eligible. None of them are binding anyway, since GoI will decide the Indian companies that get shortlisted.

Can this be interpreted as instead of 36 additional Raffles, IAF is going for 114 Rafales ? Since India has already spent more than a billion on India specific changes, it does not make sense to stop at 36. Looks like IAF is not in a mood to go for 2 different types ( Rafale and another MF) and it's a sensible decision for obvious reasons.
However, it will be a disaster if they choose to go for another fighter.
The MMRCA2 is tailored made for Rafale..... It's not by chance.
Indian pilots WANT Rafale, as Swiss pilots want it !

so it means for the forsseable future ,rafale will be capped at 36 as govt will likely to go for SEF as with this budget its beyond IAF to operate two types of TEF ,what a pity for all those money spent on the hope for more order .

this only shows how we operate in adhoc manner ....
What is SEF ?

It's absolutely unlikely that the Rafale fleet stay at 36. IAF and Indian political top brass will never make twice the error of the too small M2000 fleet.

The worst issue is between :
- Rafale win the MMRCA2
- Another plane win MMRCA2 and another and last batch of 36 Rafale will be ordered.

But seeing the IAF fleet evolution, the government may order another batch of Rafale (in May 2020, when the first will land in India ?) as a stop gap solution.
