There were rumors that 97% of all govt jobs will be reserved and 3 upper casts I.e. Brahmins, Khatriyas and Baniyas will get only 3%. This sort of nonsense added fuel to riots and unsocial elements exploited the situation. Those days communication was slow and TV was limited to Doordarshan only. By the time reality sunk in, damage was already done. Most of the rioters were not students and under the garb of the protest looted stores and damaged public property. Unfortunately quite a few students died in police firing. From what I hear, during implementation of recommendations of Mandal Commission in 90 or so, India was mighty divided to the point riots. Protests were wide spread and upper castes were totally suspicious of lower castes intentions. Interestingly this was a nation wide protest: Unlike riots of Babri Masjid demolition which was mainly a north India thing.
That said both of these are events before I was born.. So I have not seen on street reality.
