No, there is no joy among the French because the British are our allies.
Right now the F-35 is 5th gen only on paper. It still has a long way to go. And even the Pentagon is unhappy with its progress and cost management. It's going to be a real jet sometime after 2025 at its current rate of progress.
For India specifically, considering the jet is ready, there are a few other issues. The Americans want us to buy the jet and then put it through testing instead of the opposite. So we will have no clue what we are buying until after its in service. This is unrealistic to us due to the difficult terrain we have to operate the jet in. We can't buy something without first testing it in our conditions, especially when something as crucial as flight performance is in doubt. We need a very high performance jet, which is why AMCA's performance specs exceed the F-22's. The FGFA as well. They won't even provide the most classified briefing without first guaranteeing its purchase.
Also, the Americans want to sell it in a GTG deal instead of a tender, especially one where the Russians will be involved. And it's unlikely they are interested in setting up a production line.
So the only way for us to induct this jet on our terms is for us to wait until it becomes a contemporary jet, and also after they fix a lot of its performance problems with a new engine after 2035. But we are naturally going to give greater importance to our own projects by then. Even the AMCA with F414 will be more suitable for our needs by then.
I don't think the S-400 will be a problem. I think it's just an excuse.

But it was a promise of LM during the F35 design phase. They failed. And supercruise is one of the quality a 5th gen aircraft must have according to LM définition.
