Imagine if Indian Wg. Cdr Abhinandan was flying a Rafale instead of Mig-21 Bison for this engagement? Scoreline would have probably read 4-0. And not even one AMRAAM would have been able to lock on to the aircraft. Forget about targeting it.
Problem I think is the lack of internal Self-Protection Jammers and MAWS on any existing IAF plane (except Rafale in near future).
As a result, the externally mounted EL/L-8222 has to be carried by types like MiG-21 and Su-30MKI (which, besides the fact that it takes away a hardpoint, is not mounted 24x7 on all missions. Only in missions like escorting a strike package or some other instances would it be carried. I don't know and don't think SPJs like 8222 would be carried on CAPs or interceptions, and I don't know and don't think the MiG-21s in this engagement had the SPJs).
If the Wing Commander and his wingman's planes had internal SPJs and MAWS, I think the WC's plane would have survived even after taking down the F-16 and would have returned home.
