Rafale DH/EH of Indian Air Force : News and Discussions

Imagine if Indian Wg. Cdr Abhinandan was flying a Rafale instead of Mig-21 Bison for this engagement? Scoreline would have probably read 4-0. And not even one AMRAAM would have been able to lock on to the aircraft. Forget about targeting it.

Problem I think is the lack of internal Self-Protection Jammers and MAWS on any existing IAF plane (except Rafale in near future).

As a result, the externally mounted EL/L-8222 has to be carried by types like MiG-21 and Su-30MKI (which, besides the fact that it takes away a hardpoint, is not mounted 24x7 on all missions. Only in missions like escorting a strike package or some other instances would it be carried. I don't know and don't think SPJs like 8222 would be carried on CAPs or interceptions, and I don't know and don't think the MiG-21s in this engagement had the SPJs).

If the Wing Commander and his wingman's planes had internal SPJs and MAWS, I think the WC's plane would have survived even after taking down the F-16 and would have returned home.

M-2000 has always had an internal jammer and now Mig-29UPG has an IJ. Jaguar DARIN III will follow suit, and then the MKI.

Yeah, it's quite unlikely for jets to carry pod mounted SPJ during defensive CAP.

Sorry I meant MAWS.

What's the SPJ on M2K? The 29UPG had the Italian ELT-568 in upgrade.

Still do think though, that having an SPJ could have well saved Varthaman from the AMRAAM shot.

The M-2000UPG has ICMS Mk3. The older one had a podded SABRE jammer though, it was integrated with the SERVAL RWR.

Mig-29UPG has the Indian D-29. It does not have the Virgilius. Virgilius was the Russian offer for the Mig-35, whereas D-29 was designed by DARE with Israeli help. But the D-29's jammers have AESA tranceivers supplied by the Italians.

Meaning ELT-568 jammer was integrated with D-29 suite. The transceiver alone cannot be Italian and the jammer constitutes more than the antenna.

Never said our MiG-29s had Virgilius suite.

The jammer is Indian/Israeli. Only the T/R modules are Italian. The ELT-568 is not integrated with the D-29.

In fact, the jammer development was really slow and testing was carried out only in 2015. Wouldn't have happened if we had integrated an already developed jammer.

Tempest SPJ I believe has internal component?

Anyways, it was a flurry of SAMs and A2A which did him in.

Furniture .. Good one.

Il-76 has a cockpit like a drawing room ;)
I am was referring to fighters like LCA. Su-30MKI and Jags. Upgraded M2ks have it if I remember correctly. An aircraft like IL-76 will need very high jamming power due to its RCS. We have thing called Jamming power vs burn thru range based on RCS. Even USAF big birds have flares and chaff for decoy purposes and DIRCM due to their slower spped. US is developing a DIRCM for F-35 and it is likely to fielded by end 2022.
