Syrian Civil War - News & Discussions

Yeah, I've only been giving it cursory attention over the last couple of years, but I was under the impression the SDF had reclaimed 90+% of the land. Obviously not. Russia have been there exactly 3 years now too, wonder if they'd planned on being there that long? This won't be doing their finances any good.

Russian Military deployment in Syria isn't really large. Its just 2 dozen aircrafts and some Special forces and advisers. SDF control around 1/3rd of territory, But they have no choice but to accept autonomy offer from Syrian government.

This battle might be a long one.

SAA will cut through Al-Nusra lines in Northern Latakia like knife through butter. SAA is in its strongest positions ever. Since they cleared all the southern Militant held cities and enclaves, they freed up a lot of soldiers and resources. Now they can concentrate their military force on one location without putting any other cities under threat. Biggest SAA nightmare was its scattered army with many units are basically combat inefficient. Now, they are all regrouped and concentrated. It will be very hard of Militants to hold, unless US or Turkey enter the battle.

The Syrian War is not expensive for the Russians. With the exception of testing new weapons, they are just dumping their Soviet era dumb bombs there using their Soviet era aircraft.

The SAA is doing all the grunt work.

Turkey supporters may run back into Turkey. But I guess the Al-Nusra is going to be annihilated.

I doubt Turkey is up for war. They have been getting close to Russia for quite sometime now, and their main interest is the PKK, not SAA.

It's also possible that Syria and Turkey may put the squeeze on the SDF. Neither side want a Kurdish homeland after all.

True. Whenever SAA surrounded cities they gave the militants a final choice. Reconsile with goverment or Go to militant held Idlib. All hardcore militants and their families went to Idlib for the last 2 years. SAA transported hundreds of thousands of hardcore militants and their families to Idlib during the last 2 years and they are hardcore fanatics. So once the SAA attack Idlib, there is a high chance that they will cross the border to Turkey and this fanatic population is going to be a huge security threat to Turkey.

If they cross to Europe, its going to be a huge threat to Europe.

I do not think Turkey will join a direct war. Turkey need Syrian Government to eliminate the threat of Kurdish autonomous state. Also, their economy is in a bad shape and war will make it even worse.

Sorry, I meant I thought the Syrian government had 90+% of the territory. The costs will add up for the Russians as time drags on and more resources get sucked in.

It all adds up as more and more resources get sucked in and Russia doesn't have near the same financial resources of NATO.

Except that they are not going that direction. They are pulling out almost all their equipment from Syria. During the heights of operations, they only had 40 aircraft in Syria. Now its down to 25 or so. Russians know that they cannot commit any troops or resources to Syria and get bogged down like the US in Afghanistan.

Russians are just bombing the crap out of Militant held areas using the soviet stock just like the second Chechen war. Demoralize the militants and making them switch sides to the government.

They've already been bogged down 3 years and the job is only half-done at best.

They're using PGMs too.

France Says Chemical Weapon Use in Syria Is Still a ‘Red Line’
By

France remains “ready to act” if the Syrian regime uses lethal chemical weapons, the French foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement came as the Syrian regime and its allies prepare for what could be an assault on Idlib, one of the few remaining zones still under rebel control.

“Such an offensive would have disastrous consequences,” the French foreign ministry said, calling on Russia to help protect civilian populations.

France joined the U.S. and Britain in bombing Syrian sites in April, claiming chemical weapons had been used in a regime attack on a Damascus suburb.

US and allies are going to stage a small chemical attack in Idlib probably and bomb some SAA targets. The aim of the bombing is going to be degrading their capacity and take away some momentum. But SAA will retake Idlib anyway.

Or maybe the Russians are just saying that they are going to as a cover story. Ever considered that. Have a read about Mr. Assad.

Just another "Weapons of mass destruction" story as before. Not a single bit of truth to it.

Assad is winning the war now. His army is more powerful than ever since the war started. His enemies are weaker than ever since the war started. There is no military or political reasons for Assad to use any type of chemical weapons. Why should he use weapons chemical weapons when he is winning the war? He never used chemical weapons when he was getting defeated and his army was on retreat. The story of chemical weapons started coming from west when Assad's army on advance and terrorists are on defeat. He have the whole might of Russian Airforce at this back and he can cut through any militant defence with ease just like we saw it in southern Syria. The only thing that could stop or slow down Assad from winning the war is a western illegal invasion/intervention. Assad gain nothing by uising Chemical weapons, where as West gain a lot by faking a weapon of mass destruction story.

1) Assad is winning the war, his army is advancing with ease. He have no incentive to use any chemical weapons. He gain nothing, he could potentialy loose by using a militarily insignificant chemical weapon use.

2) Western supported and armed Jihadists are getting defeated and they are loosing ground. Only thing that can save terrorists are western intervention. Faking a WMD story give west chance to attack Assad, pro long the Syrian victory and protect their militant assets.

And the Russians always tell the truth don't they. All Putin's opponents really do just have unfortunate accidents, or contact with poison.

Door-to-door house clearances are notoriously dangerous and slow and bad for morale, but nerve gas makes it much easier. That would be a good reason.

It was France's intelligence assessment that concluded Assad used chemical weapons, and that was back in 2013, before the Russians joined.

You distinguish Assad from the terrorists. Assad is just a well-educated terrorist. All dictators are terrorists since they rule by fear rather than consent aka achieving political objectives via terror. It's just sad that Muslims are so bat-shit crazy that they actually ruin there own chances to have a democracy and hence to start the road to moderation. It's a catch 22 situation. But Assad winning won't fix anything. All the grievances will still be there and it'll happen again sooner or later and there'll probably be asymmetric warfare for some time after the formal end of the war, otherwise known as clusterf'ck accomplished.

The alleged killings and lies of Putin is negligibly small (no proofs either) compared to the western lies and killing spree like story of weapons of mass destruction.

Ohh.. stop it already... Brits need to stop bitching about that poisoning of that guy in Britain. Your country gave refugee fo a person who is a traitor to Russian federation and expected the Russians to suck it up. Guess what, they are not going to. Stop protecting criminals from foreign nations and no one is going to get poisoned in your Street.

No proofs what's so ever. Just some politically motivated statements. No investigation, just Statements.

Also, according to OPCW report, Assad only controllers 8 out of 11 Syrian chemical weapons facilities. The rest is controlled militants including Al-queida when they captured huge parts of Syria. So it's also kind of a blurry situation.

He is not a terrorist by international law. He is the lawful president of Syria who's goverment is recognized by UN and they also hold a seat in UN. Funny, not long ago, he used to get invited to your Queens palace and France also gave him the highest award "Legion d’honneur"

Hipocracy have no limits isn't it? He is as terrorist as most of your Kings and Queens.

Assad winning do helps a lot. He will never tolerate al-queida and ISIS. Anyway, it will be far better than the other solution, which is western supported moderate be headers winning and country pushed to endless war Just like Libya and Afganistan.

You would have to argue that the deaths of Putin's opponents are somewhat of a massive coincidence. And when coincidence reach that extent, the onus shifts to proving the contrary or providing other culprits.

Yes, people should stop bitching about the use of nerve agent on their soil shouldn't they? Dumbest statement ever.

Take up France's intelligence with some of our French members. There was a very good explanation over on militaryphotos.net providing the proof as to why Assad's forces perpetrated the 2013 strikes. Contaminated shells were of a type only used by Assad at the time. The direction of fire was from territory controlled by Assad into opposition territory.

All dictators are terrorists. What the hell constitutes lawful? By his own law? IS was the lawful government of IS under their own law. Terror and fear is no legitimate mandate to rule.

Kings and Queens don't rule in Europe anymore.

There'll be a protracted period of asymmetric warfare whatever the result, but a democratic solution would face a shorter period of the aforementioned.
