Ukraine - Russia Conflict

The Russian Defense Ministry has published footage of the destruction of the Buk-M1 air defense system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by a high-precision missile strike:

But the Russians aren't a free people . Never have been & isn't Putin a dictator ? Are you now comparing the glorious Anglo driven western civilization to a barbarous Slavic tin pot dictatorship ? What's wrong with you ?

I was wondering how this news would contrast with news of Biden receiving honest professional advice yet doing his own thing embarassing his team in the process because , well , he's Joe Biden after all , isn't he ?

Please don't blame aged related conditions for ethnicity related issues. More importantly pls don't conflate the two & offer explanations for the former when the issue is clearly the latter .

Some Russian military units suffering heavy losses in Ukraine have been forced to return to Belarus and Russia to resupply, placing additional pressure on Russia's already strained logistics, the British Defense Ministry said in an assessment Wednesday.

The problems demonstrate the difficulties Russia is having reorganizing its units in forward areas within Ukraine, the assessment says. Russia will likely continue to compensate for its reduced ground-force capability "through mass artillery and missile strikes," the assessment says.

President Joe Biden also spoke with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, informing him that the United States intends to provide the Ukrainian government with another $500 million, the White House said.

Russia this week announced plans to dial back its military activity in and around Kyiv, but Ukraine authorities say the city continues to be battered by artillery assaults.

Russian military leaders said last week that the first phase of its military operation was mostly complete and that forces would focus on "liberating" the breakaway Luhansk and Donetsk People's Republics in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

"Russia’s stated focus on an offensive in Donetsk and Luhansk is likely a tacit admission that it is struggling to sustain more than one significant axis of advance," the British assessment says.

► Poland announced steps to end all Russian oil imports by year's end. Earlier this week Poland banned coal imports.
► Ukraine asked Norway for long-range weapons to protect Ukraine's battered cities.

The Russian army has started to withdraw from Gostomel airport, northwest of Kiev, and "Chernobyl is another area where they are starting to reposition, leaving Chernobyl to go to Belarus," the senior official, who requested anonymity, told the press.

Crazy video: A clear hit in a narrow opening in the wall, where the machine-gun nest of an anti-tank guided missile is located.

Yes, it is possible. But I have the impression that this is the new plan, and that the initial plan was more ambitious because the Russians did not expect such strong resistance from the Ukrainians.

It's quite difficult to believe that they would open so many fronts at once with no real preparation at all. So feints in the north, all for the real objective, the south and the east, their Novorossiya plan, while thinking the pro-Russians populations will fall quickly. Anyway, this splits the Ukrainian Army across the country, and now the Russians will amass their firepower alongisde the territory that they actually want.

Some plans may not have worked out, like getting stuck in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv.

What are your impressions on this war and the future?

Oh don't worry, all NATO spending has increased across the board, with the US now at $0.8tr. A local and active threat is a local and active threat regardless of (in)competence levels.

:ROFLMAO:

Nearly not enough. I had hoped for Germany type approach across the board.

You couldn't make this shit up. Fired 1,000 cruise missiles, roughly the same number as used in Desert Storm, and that's restrained warfare? Indiscriminately used area bombardment on cities, blew up hospitals and schools, and that's restrained warfare? Lost 16,000 soldiers and thousands of vehicles to make a land bridge? They could have just thrown them in the sea and poured asphalt and tar on them instead.

Yes, there has been considerable restraint. Because the Russians are not targeting civilians, they consider the civilians their own. CMs hit military targets, the same as in Desert Storm. But artillery is where there was restraint. Since it's not a precision system, it can kill everything.

Can you imagine this hitting London?

For Russia it can't, for China it can. China is a ten times larger market than Russia is by population and eleven times bigger by GDP. That's about 2x larger than the difference between UK and EU or UK and US to put things in perspective.

Why does that matter? The commodities we are talking about are too few for such a direct comparison to matter.

Russia-China trade is not an equal trade. If China stops supplies to Russia for a year, the Russians will survive. If Russia stops supplies to China for a year, China will get f&cked up. That's the importance of the commodity.

The Russian view of the situation (I chose a moderate Russian)

For him, the withdrawal of troops is already in place and there have been troop movements from the north and south of Ukraine converging on the Donbass where there are still 50-70,000 Ukrainian forces that they cannot leave behind.

He does not particularly trust the word of the Ukrainian government on their (future) declaration of neutrality as they have not really implemented the Minsk agreements.

As for the status of the separatist territories and Crimea, he says that nothing has changed and nothing will change as long as the Ukrainian government remains in power and that the only way to change the situation is to force them to do so (or to replace the current government by force, not sure about the translation on this one).

For him the war will last several more months followed by an even longer period of mop-up/anti-guerrilla operations in the occupied territories (Donbass and maybe Mariupol?). He sees no immediate diplomatic solution.

On the other hand, from what he has seen on his side, the announcement of the withdrawal/redeployment of Russian forces attacking Kiev has been met with anger in Russian military circles in view of the videos of executions of Russian POWs by Ukrainians, while others are waiting to see how things will develop. He also cites the example of Syria where Russia declared its disengagement in 2016 but continued operations for several more years (albeit at a more limited level) and they are still there.

I agree with the war lasting a long time. It's the same apprehension I have with respect to a war with China. Even if they failed to achieve their objectives in a war with India, they can still keep it going for a long time, a lot longer than us.

If diplomacy is a no go, then tiring Ukraine out would be the best bet.
