HAL LUH / Ka-226: News and Discussions

We should have bought 5 years back..Not when LUH proved itself & orders are also already placed.

Anyways I don't believe we ll sign the deal soon.

With large Tumkur facility, it's only matter of SP orders.

SP deliveries of the LUH should begin at least in 2025, if not 2024. A Ka-226T contract in 2022 would give us the first helicopter in 2024. So the window for one of the Ka-226T's advantages is ending.

But I don't think the IA/IAF plan on sticking with just one helicopter. Even if the LUH ends up coming earlier, there are far too many other factors involved in this decision. One of those is the size of the fleet. While the numbers are an impressive 384 combined, we could see true numbers doubling or even tripling that as the forces get richer. We will likely need 2 squadrons for each division. That could easily take the numbers to 900+. When we are dependent on imports of critical technologies in both helicopters, to the point where none of our suppliers are interested in giving up said critical technologies, it makes sense to diversify supplies.

In the long run, HAL has plans of indigenising helicopter engines, but until that happens, we can't really call our stuff indigenous. Both LUH and Ka-226T are at similar levels of indigenisation, apart from the airframe.

Instead, there might be off-the-shelf purchases of some of the Ka-226T military choppers as the Indian Air Force needs to make immediate replacements to its fleet of over 320 aging helicopters.

HAL rotary division doing really good and their platforms are very stable. GOI should give a big number of orders to HAL. If they need different types of platforms of LUH, let the GOI spend that money on the indigenous system. Also, the big number of LUH platforms will give a better perspective for the future export option... at least learn from Chinese and start exporting and marketing your own products, stop feeding to your neighbors when your own people are starving

The Ka226T if it progresses will consist of only off the self purchase of upto 60 pieces likely. And this deal would likely be done once an alternative powerplant is certified as with American sanctions threat it's unlikely France will deliver engines to Russia.

Hopefully the HAL LUH is on time.

If they've privatised AI , I wonder why has GoI retained this relic . Thank God Vayudhoot was shut a long time ago . Else we'd see HAL sign deals selling them the ancient Dorniers too .

Bids has already been received by Government. Not opened due to elections I think. Should happen now.

Light Armour Protection will go on as an optional thing in LUH. It's Level 3 protection, means from small arms fire from ground. It will allow LUH to convert into Observation unit in hostile environment. We might see some pic of it too.

The company which is awarded has a cumulative order for 600 helicopter fittings.
This 600 number includes possible sale of LCH + LUH and retrofit of Dhruv Mk3s.

The ones on LCH might have capabilities to take on hmg fire. But LUH in its LOH role will have light Armour. It's confirmed.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) has received the Letter of Intent from the Services for the manufacture of 12 Light Utility Helicopters (LUH), which have been designed and developed indigenously. At the same time, nine Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) have been manufactured against the sanction of 15 limited series production (LSP) variants and are in the process of being handed over to the Services.

Today, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Argentine Armed Forces and Bell Canada signed a contract for the acquisition of six Bell 407 GXI, which will replace the SA315B Lama, for high mountain rescue operations.

In addition to high altitude operations (for which the Airbus H145 and HAL LUH MK-1 were also evaluated), the new Bell 407 GXI will perform search and rescue (SAR) missions, community support, aero-medical evacuations, natural disaster response, etc.
